Advice on the forum....

So two things,
I'm a month in and think its time to thin out/weed. Do I just pull everything that I think is not what I planted, and then leave just one of everything I did I.e. I have several carrots sprouting in the place for one.
Second, I have several broccoli and lettuce sprouting, they are in egg cartons, when should I plant these out? I was thinking this week but the weather is a bit cooler.

 

Frost tonight, so moving my potatoes inside!

Is this a tomato seedling? Planted 6, 2 have come up near to where they should be..but I'm not convinced

I'm in NW Worcestershire/Shropshire borders we haven't had rain for over two months now ( about a fortnight before lockdown started ) and no frost since first week of January. In fact I've been shocked by some of my bulbs which usually flower in July that are flowering now.

 

So I have decided to leave the nets to the Fisher's! I've replaced my net with several foil type children's windmills. So far the birds appear to be freighened off by them

 

So next year I think I'm going to totally rotate. Leave the beds to recover a year. Thinking of getting some pallet collars, 2 sets of 2 gives me 12" I think. Which should be okay for most of what I grow. Would manure and compost be enough to develop suitable soil profile to grow in?

 

I waited the 100 days for onions from bulbs, as some have told me from other sources. Pulled one up and it's a decent size pickled onion/nearly a golf ball size. Some of the pinion tops are starting to fall. So I think that is it for them. But should I be waiting until they flower? Or is my soil just poor?
I saw a trick whereby you cut the tops back six inches up to three times to promote bigger onions. Is this viable for next time? Or any other suggestions welcome

 

Hi @beefpotnoodle sounds like your soil might be a bit lacking (though it could be the onions are suffering from the long dry spell we had). When you can, I would recommend trying to source well rotted horse manure. Horse owners are normally glad to get rid of it. In the autumn you can spread it over your land and let the worms drag it in for an easy life!

 

I thought I wasgwas pretty good at watering daily ... made sure they got at inch of water at least for the week. I have found a farmer (not nearby) but at least a source of some brown gold. I'll be down sizing next year and concentrating on two raised beds as now I've just commandeered some borders. I will be filling the beds up this august with manure so it can be ready in time
