Have to say that the BoJo U turn on issuing school meal vouchers over the Summer hol's is the right decision :dbgrtmb:.

My Mum was a Dinner Lady - most people don't realise how important the free school meals are - I've been told that is some cases children have nothing else to eat. Mum told me that some of the kids were so hungry that they would wait outside the school kitchen doors - looking for any left overs - which Mum duly provided.

Mum still sees some of these kids (now men) when she is out and about - every single one of them takes the trouble to chat to her - in some respects she is not only my Mum.

I can remember some pretty poor families when I was a kid, but dont think any got free school meals, a small bottle of milk was as far as it went back then.

Mind you the school dinners were a shilling a day, which I'm not sure how that equates to today's prices.

But then there wasn't hardly any single parent families.;)

Unfortunately Dads have a couple or more broods theses days.;)

1963 1shilling = £1.06 2020 and 1970 1 shilling = 0.78 from https://www.measuringworth.com/calculators/ukcompare/relativevalue.php you need to relate this typical incomes of labourers etc at the time.
I know that some pupils at my school in the 70s got free school meals.
At infant and primary school we used to get small bottles of milk, third of a pint I think; as milk monitor I got first dibs on any unwanted ones, sometimes I got 3 and I still like full fat milk. A certain M Thatcher stopped that when Education Secretary.
