Do those big onions taste the same as regular size onions?

They taste slightly milder @Snorky85 - and they don't store very well compared to smaller varieties. I dice them up and open freeze them, then stored in a bag in the freezer we can use for stews, currys etc.

I ordered my Kelsae a couple of days ago, planning to get an early sowing on 1st December. I am so disorganised this year I still haven't packed away my grow lamps from the spring, I will be needing them in a few weeks so it pays to be lazy :)

I never put my grow lamps away either. I'm tempted to try the Kelsae onion too. I just end up cutting them up and freezing them so may aswell do the same. Could be fun growing it. (Did i actually just say that?!?:rolleyespink:)

60 Ailsae, 60 Kelsae and 100 Mammoth Red would be too much for us, so will probably save half for next year, especially as I'll also be growing a load of leeks and have also put 194 garlic cloves in.

I've got onion white rot in my current garden so I'll be growing in containers.

Yeah Scrungee, I got my seed from Fosters, did you get the free carrot seeds?

I'll be growing some onions in containers as 'insurance'.

Got a free pkt of Kuruda stump type carrot seeds with my order. Got all excited when I saw 3 pkts as i thought they'd doubled up on something I'd ordered.

20 Of my 194 planted cloves are Elephant Garlic.

P.S. Peter Glazebrook sowed the first of his onion seeds on 5th October.

Kelsae have always germinated well for me, I will sow a dozen and expect to plant out around 8 allowing for failures and a couple of runts. I also grow lots of onion setts and Bedfordshire Champion from seed so will be self sufficient.

Kelsae need a lot more growing space than ordinarily varieties so allow for that too. The seed is relatively expensive and stores ok for 3 years at least.

I only grew them (Kelsae) once. From memory, the germination was pretty poor. That said, I tried growing ‘ordinary’ onions from seed this year, and couldn’t get any to germinate

I grew some once. All I got was a single large (golf ball size) clove from each one.

Counted my onion seeds this morning:

Ailsae approx '60 seeds' contained 160
Mammoth Red '100 seeds' contained 170
                              Kelsae '60 seeds' contained 110

                              That's a lot better than T&M's quantities.

Something went wrong, so they only produced 'rounds' which if replanted the following year would have turned into bulbs, like this one of mine
