Agave

hi everyone, I have a 45 year old Agave in a big pot out on a patio . In this current weather of very low temperatures and hard frosts , i have it covered with a old duvet cover . Is this enough ?

 

it wouldn't be enough where I am .I usually use fleece ,A couple of layers might add to the protection.

 

Well I have to ask where has it been for the last 44 winters.
Well I'd remove the duvet as soon as temperatures rise above zero each day.
I covered one of mine last night, but it looks slightly frozen this morning.
Depends to some extent which species it is as some can take low temperatures better than others.

I'd be wary of letting it freeze too much especially if it is wet at the root.

 

I do take it off when the temperature goes above 0, and the sun gets on it . Use to take it indoors over winter but now its to heavy to move !

It would help enormously if posters put their location on their profiles!
I'd say that a duvet would offer more protection than thin horticultural fleece
Another solution would be to wrap it up in the totally dry duvet then make a 'tent' of strong plastic sheet or aluminium insulation (anything waterproof) well pegged down and leave it until frosts are finished.
Agave americana will survive frost but looks a real mess come the spring. Good, thick gloves and a sharp knife required to cut away the damaged leaves!

I thought that, and then spotted it was a duvet cover, still better than fleece until it gets sodden.

I'm thinking the roots freezing could be a problem.

One of mine is showing black spots already.

Glad i saw this thread as id forgotten a couple in the greenhouse and it will be -7c tonight. Rescue time.

 

No need to apologise, ashley1234 It's a relief to know that you're not in the freezing wilds of Scotland! It sounds as though you're doing everything you can to get it through the winter. We'll all be crossing our fingers that it's not a really nasty one!
