Sadly the greenhouse won’t be fully operational this year, if at all, so I’ll be late to the party and mainly growing outside. Only using up old seed but thankfully there’s plenty of those!

        Hi,

Just a question for use later in the year, but for greenhouse toms, do we really need to put shading up for them and if so is it more to reduce the amount of light on them or to help keep the greenhouse temperature down ?
We have twin walled polycarb on ours these days.

I dont think you would need shading with polycarb , it tends to filter the sun to some extent and you do get some insulation from it being twin wall.
          But see what other say.

Tomatoes need as much light as possible so I only use my shades as a last resort. I got some old bamboo blinds that can be easily draped over.

Oh right, ............ Well I didn't think the fruit was anything like a tomato taste wise.
It was a long time ago, but from seed you get the old solanum type approach of growing upwards fast with big leaves on a single strong stem, eventually it branches and then starts to flower and bush out at the top.
Mine was 8ft high with the fruit hanging down.
Quite nice to look at, as a plant, but I never found a good use for the fruit.

Maybe someone with better culinary skills than me could make good use of the fruit.

Thanks Pete. I may ... and I may not! I thought of the Portuguese Tomato Jam (Doce de Tomate) they serve with soft Goat's Cheese maybe.
