It comes from the French (if I'm allowed to mention that word in here  :heehee:) as it's taken from Dent de Lion or lion's tooth because of the shape of the leaves. :ideaIPB: :)

:scratch:I wonder if there is an app or program where you could type in or copy and paste the long names of flowers or plants and it speaks the name back pronouncing the name as :noidea:I find it impossible to pronounce most of the fancy names like Metasequoia glyptostroboides or, Iphiopogon planicarpus nigresecens.:wallbanging: We used to have a French and Italian language program that spoke back to use when learning

Many plant name pronunciations can be found on Youtube @Jordhandeson. :)

I have this little plant....Chiastophyllum Oppositifolium but I'm not sure how to pronounce the first part 'Chia' and can't raise it on the net. I'm guessing 'Chee-er'?

I thought Chia was pronounced CH EYE as in Chia seeds?

Chia is normally pronounced Chee uh as two syllables

Chai (Hindi word for tea, from the Chinese Cha) is pronounced Cheye (Chi) as a single syllable.

How to pronounce Chiastophyllum - I haven't the faintest idea :noidea: :heehee:

Lots of plant names finish off with an anus. :)

                  I have a Trachycarpus wagnerianus.
I'm assuming this was named after some well known plant hunter called Wagner, why they had to bring a certain part of his anatomy in to it is beyond me.

@SandyNI, my apologies for hijacking your thread. I seem to have stirred up plant name pronunciations.

Listening to the pronunciation of 'Chia' on youtube it seems that you're right @shiney and it's the same way I pronounce it.

                    I'll type it as I speak it....Chee-er-stoff-ill-erm. :)

I came across this book a couple of days ago, something I will invest in.

@Sheal please don't apologise. I'm finding it both amusing and interesting. Being new to the plant world I'm loving using the proper names of plants.... makes me sound like a wee clever clogs.... until a shop assistant corrects me very loudly!

@Sheal that book looks good but we have made a decision that we shall not buy any more books. For the last few years we have been selling them on the internet but the pile of books stacked up in my office doesn't seem to be going down  . They are the ones that are listed in Mrs Shiney's online bookshop.

I did five years of Latin when I was at school and in those days, in the Latin class, we had to try and only speak Latin. A couple of years after leaving school I had forgotten most of it!

I sometimes speak "french", but my Latin is restricted to plant names and I say them, and learn them, as they are written, which is not a bad idea as it does mean you can then write them in most cases.
I still say some English words in head as they are written, it help to get the spelling right.

Is there a link available to Mrs. Shiney's bookshop please @shiney. Anything in between Roman and Tudor history I would be interested in. :)

Latin was no longer a subject when I was at school but I remember doctors were still using it when I was young.

I'll check with her about a link (think it's either on Amazon or ebay - or both) but don't think she has any history books. If we do have some I'll let you know by PM. :)

I remember chatting in Latin to Cicero when I visited Rome just over a couple of thousand years ago. I gave him a few hints on public speaking. :old:

I also did Latin for 3 awful years at school, it did seem longer. The only use for it was for playing Bingo at the catholic club. They would call the numbers out in Latin so the protestants could not win :heehee:
