Grass clippings as mulch

Sorry if this is a repeated question.
I'm wanting to use mulch on my veggie garden but unsure as what to use. I read somewhere that lawn clippings can be used and it will introduce nitrogen Into the soil as it decomposes down. Plus its free and readily available. I do not have a compost heap so can't compost them first and it's too expensive to buy compost for mulch so I thought grass could be the answer.
What do you think about the idea?

Hello Peas, welcome to GC! Oh yes...as long as the grass hasn't been treated with weedkiller, it's ideal as a (thin) mulch. Not more than 2" at a time, though, as it gets very hot in the process of decomposing. And never touching the trunks or stems of plants. (Tell that to the blackbirds!).

 

Ooh thank you for the tip, I didn't know about not letting the grass touch the stems. Will defo remember that.

 

I use grass clippings on all my beds. But not too thickly. It gets super hot!
