Ok, so I meant in nutrient quantity.
The FBB I'm buying appears to need 4-5 handfuls per square yard, that's ridiculous.
Its £14 a bucket and at that rate it will only treat 10square yards I'm guessing.

Best I buy my veg from the supermarket, I'm not sure I can afford the home grown, organic gravy train for much longer.

 

I sort of agree with most Veg, but shop bought Tomatoes are full of water with no taste, plus you can't beat new Potatoes with Butter.

 

What weight is inside the bucket? It's very rare to come across a GC or DIY chain selling fertiliser in 25kg bags, they tend to sell buckets or cartons. I sell fertiliser mainly in 25kg bags, with most going to the allotment societies I supply. A 25kg bag of FBB should be sufficient to cover 350 sq metres when using at the recommended rate of 70 grams per sq metre.

 

I like the piccolo tomatoes from the shops. I wonder what tomatoes will taste like in the future, now some commercial growers are cleaning waste carbon dioxide and pumping it into glasshouse's.

You know what the ecolos say .... feed the soil, not the plants. Get yourself some chickens and a few clumps of comfrey or nettles Must admit I don't put fertiliser on the veg plot and it's still producing well 14 years on. The tunnel beds get a sprinkling of Growmore, with FYM for the cucumbers. FBB was THE best fertiliser for ornamentals, but mixing 1kg packets of the main ingredients would be unreliable, unscientific and stupidly expensive
If you've got an allotment, isn't there an association or commitee or something to buy supplies in bulk?

 

Marmande, my nearest big town, used to be famous for it's tomatoes, but just like Spain, now they're grown under cover, hydroponically, (like the strawberries, too) and you might as well eat a chunk of plastic. I grow loads of beefsteaks and bottle them for use through the winter. They might be sloppy, but they're still full of flavour

 

I'll look tomorrow at the bucket weight, but its not anywhere near 25Kg , maybe half that.
But bear in mind the stuff I've got is lower in nutrient than you sell in your bags.

I grow toms and give them minimal feeding, I dont even water them if I can get away with it, I think the harder you grow a tom the better it will taste.

But I do like to add, a bit each year, to the fertility of the soil, if I can.

I've bought piccolo tomatoes from the supermarket and they do taste reasonable for supermarket ones.
I used to grow Marmande toms back in the 80s, horrible misshapen things, but they tasted nice.

The Brussel Sprouts I planted last week down the allotment have been scoffed. Nearly all leaves gone - but they have a strong root system and have already started to regenerate. Any how - now surrounded by slug pellets and each has a bell cloche - which is securely pegged down.

The new Challenger Mk3 won't be able to get to them.
