Recommendations for a instant screen tree pls

Hi,

I need to plant a tree to act as an instant screen.

I want to plant something already near the height of the 9ft I require but have no clue as to what I should get. Would ideally like an evergreen so have screen all year round but not really wanting something that grows to quickly like a Laylandii.

If anyone can make any recommendations I would appreciate it. Or if anyone has any alternative ideas to use as the screen at 9ft high I would also be interested. I did think bamboo might be an option but will that thin out during winter?

Acuba is a good doer but any tree already at that height will cost you a bob or two.

 

I've bought a lot of pleached trees for above fence height screening. But at that height they do cost a bit - but much nicer than having leylandii

What is it screening / hiding?

 

Can't beat Cherry Laurel in my book - evergreen - tolerates all sorts - cheap - plenty of mature specimens to buy on line.

 

Arbutus unedo 'Rubra'! It should do very well in S. Wales Fantastic small tree that is always doing something interesting, with pink bell flowers then pretty, strawberry-like fruits. Evergreen and attractive peeling bark too. No idea whether big specimens are available, though...

Paramount Plants do them. I've had plants off them and always been pleased with them. I visited their nursery before forking out and that was a mouth-watering outing! (Leave wallet at home ...)

Its in the Ericaceae family ... but not needing an Acid soil? Very confusing ...

I always think this is a problem, you either have to fork out loads of money for a pretty much mature shrub/small tree, or you have to buy something smaller and cheaper that will grow fast.
You then end up with the continual cutting back of the cheaper option once it reaches the height you want.

When we moved in here the Leylandii were 45 years old and 50' tall. Sad really, as they had been doubled planted with a row of nice Thuja plicata atrovirens in front, I presume as a "nursemaid" to help the Thuja get established, with intention to clear-fell after 10 years. We took the Leylandi out, but the moth eaten, light-starved, Thuja took a while to recover and fill in.

Hi Paul,
As you mentioned an alternative to Bamboo,..how about Anti Weed Matting.
Each roll is approx 4Ft,..it does not catch the wind like a sail but passes through,..its long lasting,..mine is about 3 years old,..only one problem,..if you have birds feeding from feeders they do crap on the matting however come next rain it washes off.

Very cheap to purchase.

I needed three tall wooden poles,..from the top of one pole to another i placed a sturdy cane,..stapled it with a large staple,..then bent some strong wire as below.

Pushed down the wire on top of the Bamboo and the overlapping Anti Weed Matting,..then squeezed the wire together like a clothes peg,..job done,..as mentioned mine is still going strong after more than 3 years,..total cost including poles was 15 euro's.

 

Just a note about Cherry Laurel (as I had considered that myself) when you cut them back the leaves look a bit "hacked" as the leaves are so chunky.
