Do I need some patience........ or should a sow some more seed!?

Morning all
I recently moved into a new build and the lawn is terrible (as this is a friendly website that’s the strongest adjective I will use, but it is a lot worse than that!). It’s uneven, it’s patchy, there is debris and rubble at the surface - so I have got rid of the debris best I can, I’ve built a lawn lute/leveller (goodness me they are expensive!) and I’m going to overseen and add top dressing, hopefully that will sort some of the patchy unevenness!

on top of this, the lawn naturally slopes away from the house, but to the right of the lawn, not only does it slope away, it also slipped to the right.

so in a bid to level that up and to make it more useable, I’ve filled it in with approx 5 tonnes of soil. I then prepped that area and just over 3 weeks ago I seeded it, gently raked it in and walked it in. since then it has mainly rained - so I have not needed to water.

10 days later and green shoots start appearing and these patches of shoots have continued to grow. However there are some significant gaps/bald patches!

I’m at a stage where I believe I need to flatten the grass (tilling?) but wondered if I should be adding more seed and a touch of top soil or am I being impatient? Where seed isn’t growing appears more compacted than the growing areas.

Hi looking good , I would give a light trim on a very high blade and then reseed the bare patches and a thin sprinkle of soil over the seed then just leave alone others may have other advice on here ... try and use the same variety of grass seed that you originally used ...

do you mean rolling ? at this stage of growth its a trim at the highest height to encourage side shoots .... for 3 weeks its doing well ...

thanks @Spruce - I will give it a trim. stupid question, I assume I am safe to walk on it (in order to cut it I mean) without damaging?

 

you could use a board / plank to stand on as it will distributed your weight more evenly as my lawn is like a sponge at the moment with all this rain we have had so I am keeping off it until it dries out
