Noob looking for a new plant :)

Hi all again,

I had great response to my planter question a little while back, i'm now looking for a specific plant but have no idea of name etc.

It needs to be a grass type plant, perennial, like a mostly shaded area in a large raised planter Fairly tall, maybe 1m or a little more/less, spread of around 1m also.

In the picture, centre left is a Hydrangea, I want to move that to a large pot and put the grassy thing in there as a backdrop - as we use the garden, that side of the planter is the back and mostly shaded.

If I recall correctly the two plants in the rear corners are Nandina.

 

Hello! Would Miscanthus fit? There are various versions, with vertical or horizontal stripes and lovely 'flowers' in autumn.

 

Thanks, that looks good, just had a quick read and slight concerns over it growing to 12' high and being invasive? Maybe thats only if left to grow unhindered ?

I'll put it on the list though

 

IIRC, smaller varieties are available I've got a couple in the bed on the drive and they never get above 1.54m, 1m circumference.

Is it important to wait for a certain time of year to be moving plants about or can it be done anytime ?

 

That's a tricky one! Here October is the only month it's possible. There, if you're not in a frost pocket, I'd say September/October would be ideal. Whenever you move them, you'll need to keep an eye on watering should it turn dry. Unlikely, I know, but it can happen
