@ john558 that could form the basis of a new modern age comedy show, at my age, I believed that the best material has been used up over the years but everyday here we are, new material by the bucket load, and sadly is now commonplace.

So earlier in the week an electricity sub station caught fire which means we have reduced power coming in from France and will have for some time.
Now they are saying energy prices have risen considerably and for some reason we have low wind generation and solar, I wonder why that is:scratch::biggrin:

Just imagine if we were all relying on that to drive our cars.
          Or heat our homes.

Not sure we can wait for 10 to 20 years for them to come on line.

You could probably double that figure if the development of the new Moorside nuclear plant is a guide line. Wasn't a coal fired power station, West Burton A, fired up on the 6th September to plug the gap, they said it was due to high gas prices. I think its more to do with the lack of wind and solar power energy being produced.

Waiting years because the country has piddle poor planning is par for the course in this country. Given the present capacity of the power infrastructure and lack of forward thinking, it will be fun when everyone plugs the car in to charge and we watch the lights go out, oh hang on, that wont happen because we have smart meters......

Years ago we had a substation burn up but the grid rerouted and we had power restored in a few hours two years ago we lost the same station and went dark for two days, that's progress NOT.

Our political and leading classes did this to us, and let's face it they don't give a monkeys because "I'm alright Jack"

It has been known for decades that we were going to come up short, but rather than invest in our own nuclear technology we essentially put it out to tender; that tender was done in such a way that we (the country) would carry the bulk of the risks and the entities involved would get all the profit. We did have some sensible players involved (Toshiba being one) however they got into their own hot water and had to cut off any risky/costly programs to survive with UK nuclear being one of those. We then ended up tied to the Chinese and I believe that has now even stalled.

We had the know-how as we were one of the first countries in the world to have nuclear power, but as always nowadays it boiled down to a simple polar argument - coal and nuclear = bad, wind and sun = good. Only, we live in a country where neither of those are a given. Events such as Chernobyl and Fukushima were held up as the reasons, however there was no context consideration.

Finally, we seem to be at a stage where smaller scale nuclear seems to be gaining ground here in the UK, with Rolls Royce heavily involved. In my opinion, this will hopefully be the key for us - not having massive sites such as Dounreay, but a higher number of smaller ones that are the size of a big field essentially.

The thing that really boils my wee is that all of this was in the name of 'green'.....

That is wind turbine blades that are being buried in landfill because they cannot be recycled. How is that good for the environment??

Oh, and for all those preaching about electric cars - maybe these children mining Cobalt for batteries should be considered?

Conveniently, now gas prices are rising, just in time for winter - Gas price rises prompt urgent government talks

They must think we are thick.

Folks might realise that we've been sold a pup when they are freezing their bits off in the midst of 1970's style power cut.

Well said Fat Controller. I don’t know that much about solar other than my aunt put panels on her roof many years ago and they never went anywhere close to paying for themselves and were nigh on useless. This admittedly was pre tariff and no doubt the panels are more efficient today and people got very generous tariffs as an incentive.
I do know a fair amount about wind factories however and the more I learnt the more I realised they are a wonderful political tool( can be seen so justify green taxes, hmm) and are making a fortune for those who own the sites with subsidies and payments for turning turbines off if too much electricity is being produced. You think ones not turning are broken? Usually it is because the producer has been paid to switch certain numbers off to stop over production!
The turbines are now being scattered all over our inshore sea bed. Any studies on the amount of sea birds being killed by them? If there are many the evidence is not visible. Any link to the increased number of whale and dolphin beaching? Would we find out if there is?
I am all for trying to save our planet as long as that is actually what we are doing or is it just lip service to be seen to be while in effect making certain people and companies shed loads of money which we as consumers are paying for. The cry heard round these parts of “oh great cheap leccy if we do not object to turbines being right in our doorstep” sounds somewhat hollow now. That was what was promised by the developers around here.Personally my electricity has gone up 44% in the last 9 months

Maybe by the time it's fixed the French will be talking to us again; otherwise we still might not get power through the interconnector.

That is a nutty policy to be fair - I am one of those at 'that age' where I sit in between the two, so I measure distance in yards/miles, smaller ones generally in feet and inches but use millimetres if it is something that demands a really tight tolerance. I do weights mostly in metric, but can work in imperial also - as a kid, it was always 5lb of potatoes when I was sent to the shop for example. Money is decimal, but I remember shillings, threpenny bits etc. However for us to go all the way back to imperial sounds daft to me - no reason at all to do so and there are folks younger than me (my daughter for example) that wouldn't know an ounce or an inch if it bit them.
