This morning I came across a couple of Sycamore helicopter seeds. I have an idea of planting a couple , keeping them dwarf and turning into bonsai trees. Does anyone know how I should plant these type of seed. Do I soak them ? Just plant them as is ?, should I just leave them lay on the surface of compost ?, or cover with compost ?
    Any advice welcome

No need to do anything special Lem. The one remaining Sycamore I have in my garden sheds it's seeds everywhere and they sprout very quickly and easily. I spend ages every year pulling the seedlings out of my gravel drive. :mute:

Lightly cover and leave outside, they will germinate as it warms up next spring.

Thanks at @Sheal & @pete for your advice, I can honestly say that I’ve never had a go at growing one before, just thought I’d give it a try

We are surrounded by big sycamore trees and their seeds are a big problem, they come up thick in the spring and the seedlings quickly put down a long tap root. The seeds get everywhere, blocking my gutters and drains and the vents in parked cars.

Kept small as a bonsai will be safe, don't be tempted to plant one outdoors though :dbgrtmb: it will be interesting to see if you get the nice autumn leaf colour on a bonsai, I understand they are related to Maples.

Lovely trees when they're not in yours or neighbouring garden! I feel the same about oaks as I clear hundreds of seedlings.

                Good luck on the bonsai!

@Lem ,have you thought that maybe you would be better off buying some Japanese maple seeds and growing them instead.

@pete i’ve already got 3 maple seedling and 3 gum tree seedlings growing, their about 2 1/2” tall at present. The reason for the sycamore, I was curious as I’d never tried to germinate the seed. I’ve got 2 Scot’s pine bonsai saplings growing, they are doing quite well, I kept dwarfing them so they have a thicker than normal stem for their size. These are about 5” tall so far :dbgrtmb:
