Hi and thank you for your suggestions. I've found capillary watering works up to a point on a small scale but it hasn't proved effective with big pots of tomatoes, for example.
Several helpful ideas here. Thank you for replying.

Hi again. I have a water butt nearby so this is something I can try. (Poetry!) It's very useful to know what's available - like a battery-powered water-timer!
      Thanks again.

I just drape them over the apex, with no fixing. At first I had strings attached like guy ropes but I found they stayed in position under their own weight. I can quickly take them off on overcast days.

This is the only photo I can find of them:

Just to add to the mix of shading and such.
Here is a scaffold net and bean cane approach which does for keeping the heat out and and the plants from screaming out for more drink.
In winter I shall be putting up bubblewrap if I can get a big enough roll.

Previously used the white paint on shading, but this year for the roof, gone for the Green netting like you.
Got it mail order from Elixir garden supplies who also do bubble wrap etc at seemingly reasonable prices if you cannot find any locally.

If you buy bubble wrap ensure it's the UV resistant stuff, it's slightly more expensive than packaging stuff.

New that one when I was up north too. Now down south it seems that the green net is the norm on houses round here.
