Passiflora and other "exotic" climbers

Wow,that's a good one, my suggestion for something more showy was obviously wrong.

 

That is really lovely Vicky.

My parents had a huge one that if left to do as it wished would have taken over the back of their kitchen wall......we had to fight our way through it at times to get in and out of the side gate!! Back when Mum was still with us she had it neatly under control.
In Dad's time it even adopted the nearby washing line too.

 

Since moving to London the closest I get to Passiflora is buying the Granadilla fruits (P.ligularis) from the markets. Sublime flavour!!

 

Ohhh...you didn't give up all your wonderful plants?

 

Oh @longk I wondered why I hadn't seen posts from you recently! I always liked seeing your Sturt Pea!

 

We made a detour yesterday to check on this Passiflora- growing gracefully through a fence, mingling with conifers in North Tyneside.

Rather remarkable

Here's my white Passiflora. It's had many flowers this summer and there are still a few scraggy ones clinging on.

 

Copied from another thread, but just to let you know, @longk, that i got a Gelsemium in the end and it seems reasonably happy ( The Thunbergia decided to share it's space, which is handy as the G finishes flowering in April).

I kept a few choice ones at my parents as I called in two of three times a week but that cold snap in autumn '22 (?) caught me out and that was that.
Life in London sits well with me though.

Top floor (seventh) balcony might be a bit much for it though, even in Maida Vale.

 

You could start a miniature garden on your balcony @longk !

 

When I visited a GC a long time ago, I saw a beautiful red passiflora growing in a greenhouse. It was obviously tender and needed protection, even down here in Cornwall. It was in full flower and stunning.

 

There are some lovely red hybrids now, I think, @Goldenlily26. Before, P. alata and P. vitifolia were the only options, with P. manicata and P. antioquiensis (which is more deep pink). There was a very knowledgeable chap on here a few years ago who grew an amazing range of species and hybrids near Bedford. I wonder where he is now.......

 

Alata is my favourite.
Nicely scented as well.
