Round here, @noisette47, unless you're prepared to drive to Nantes, Angers or La Rochelle, there is limited choice for many things, especially fabrics, haberdashery, crafty stuff so you have to buy online. Same with plants - plenty of GCs but limited range and daft prices.

I have 2 British friends here whom I see infrequently. All the ladies at patch group and the people at garden club are French and discerning. I don't see any of them complaining about lack of choice or quality in consumer goods and food apart form moans that prices have definitely risen for the weekly shop.

Well I tend to buy British if I can in some things but to be honest I only tend to try to avoid crap, so if it looks rubbish its probably Chinese IMO.

Not a moan as this must add to Musk's woes - shame.

      YESTERDAY:
"There is no substitute for Starlink."
--Elon Musk, bragging about how dependent Ukraine is on his product.
      TODAY:
"We are shipping 40,000 units to Ukraine to replace Starlink."
      --Eutelsat, a French satellite company.

@Obelix-Vendée, of all the many soft drinks on the market, the original full-sugar Coco-Cola is one of the least packed with ingredients. :) The ones with sugar substitutes have goodness knows what in. I noticed a report this week that children under 8 should avoid Slushies due to the presence of Glycerol, an artificial sweetener. Apparently it can cause a sudden drop in blood sugar and organ collapse in some youngsters, particularly if drunk quickly on an empty stomach! :hate-shocked:

Not that I am recommending daily consumption of Coco-Cola, but faced with an array of soft drinks, it would not be a bad choice.

As I don't drink 'soft drinks' (or hard drinks :heehee:) it is easy for me to say that people shouldn't drink those that have a high sugar content (apparently, most of them) but the full ingredients of Coca Cola are not known. To quote Wikipedia

The company protects the secrecy of its syrup recipe by shipping ingredients to its syrup factories in the form of anonymous "merchandises", numbered 1 through 9. Factory managers are told the relative proportions of each numbered merchandise, and the mixing procedure, but not the ingredients in the merchandises, some of which are themselves mixtures of more basic ingredients. Merchandise no. 1 is known to be sugar, in the form of high-fructose corn syrup or sucrose (see variations, below); caramel coloring is no. 2, caffeine is no. 3, and phosphoric acid is no. 4. The identities of merchandises 5 through 9 are a matter of debate – particularly "merchandise 7X" (the "X" has never been explained), which is thought to contain a mixture of essential oils such as orange, lime, lemon, and lavender.[18]

A slightly funny story about Coke and Pepsi:- years ago Mrs Shiney was P.A. to the Chief Executive of a big bank who provided loans to both companies. It was part of Mrs Shiney's job to make sure that when those companies were coming for a conference she had to make sure that their opposition's drinks were not on display anywhere on the premises and especially in the conference rooms where they had glass fronted fridges.

I always put proper sugar coke in my Bacardi so I presume I'm getting a double dose.
              Can't stand artificial sweetners.

Not knowing what you are paying to put into your body is a rather unpleasant thought. Takes me back to being a “picky” child who, when asking what was in the meal, got the reply from an irascible grandparent “Ger it dahn yer an shut up.”

I’ll take high sugar content over any level of artificial sweetener content, @shiney. ;)

When Coco-Cola was first marketed, it came in 200 ml servings. (A regular can is 330 ml and a mixer can 150 ml today.) Consumers complained of nausea after drinking it. They weren’t used to such a sugar rush. Phosphoric acid was added as it is an anti-emetic.

I keep a couple of 150 ml cans chilled at all times. I find it excellent for treating nausea (which I am prone to). :blue thumb:

They're "giving away" Pepsi/Coke in ASDA. When you buy pizza, if you buy 2 and a bottle of the stuff you get money off - it's actually a fair bit cheaper to do this. So on the way out I put the bottle in the food bank as we don't drink the stuff. One day I forgot to leave it in the food bank, so I found a lorry driver having a nap in his lorry in the car park and tapped on his window to see if he wanted it. He said thank you that's so generous and accepted it. I'll do anything to get rid of it. I would rather have a cold glass of tap water.

I've heard this expression sugar rush and over activity, can't say I have ever noticed it, likewise addicted to chocolate or caffeine.
Never noticed any effects of any of that.

It would take a lot more than a couple of spoons of sugar to make me rush anywhere.

Glycerol is an alcohol so has no place in anything consumed by children and even young teenagers whose livers are not yet ready for processing it without damage. @pete you need to think proportionately - there are 10 teaspoons of sugar in a single can of coca-cola plus the colourings and other chemicals. The effect of those on a small child's brain and body are far more intense than in a fully grown adult. Sugar rush is real.

The only soft drinks we have are Old Jamaica ginger beer and unsweetened orange juice. We fizz our own tap water. I used to buy sliced wholemeal brioche to make bread and butter pudding till I looked at the ingredients - long list of additives. Now I buy it from the fresh baked section where it contains only flour, yeast, milk, eggs, sugar and butter. No chemical colourings or stabilisers or preservatives to assault our organs.

I do drink Coke... however, my choices to not drink Coke have been virtually obliterated thanks to the sugar tax coming in, as almost all drinks have moved over to artificial sweeteners, which I absolutely cannot stand. There is one sweetener or perhaps it is a certain combination of sweeteners that I am allergic to - brings my skin out in big red, itchy/hot ring marks (I've even tripped over that one with some organic ciders that use artificial sweeteners) - and don't make the mistake of thinking it is only fizzy drinks either, as it is virtually all diluting juices and even some fresh juices too. I get fresh orange and apple from our milkman and they are free of sweeteners, but choices are really, really limited for anyone that doesn't want these chemical sweeteners.

That sounds more like "I'd rather be shot than strangled" :heehee: Neither a lot of sugar nor sweeteners are any good to you.

Mrs Shiney found that a lot of her patients' health improved by three simple things - reducing (preferably cutting out) sugar and sweeteners and increasing water intake instead of them. A lot of problems seemed to be helped, or solved, by being sufficiently hydrated.
