There was also the fact that US GPs prescribed it willy nilly.
In the UK it's pretty much restricted to hospital use and prescription from consultants, it was widely used during COVID when patients were intubated, it's advantage is that it is powerful and quick. Another use is in patches for pain control in oncology patients, do not have a hot shower while using these the heat speeds up the transmission through the skin.
It is a drug of abuse in the UK and increasing. More of an issue especially among young people is ketamine, it's cheaper and more obtainable than fentanyl.

Modern life, eh? When I was a teenager the only illicit drug to be had in the village was a puff on a shared Players Navy Cut behind the rec gates.

Not funny really @Ergates. We need a Scary/WTF button @shiney!!

Most of the stuff we want to watch is on at dinnertime or when we're out at dance class, yoga, golf so we record almost everything. That means we skip thru ads. I mostly listen to the TV tho as I can't sit with my hands still - that way leads to scoffing too much chocolate - so I do embroidery or any hand-stitching of hems and so on when I'm making new clothes. That's fine but if a programme uses or needs sub-tites, OH has to read them to me.

There was a fairly recent survey that found most young people use subtitles, think it was up to 80%. It's only in part because they watch things on their phones.

I also had a conversation with my brother and we genuinely can't think of anything we have ever bought because we saw it on an advert. I'm sure there is something but adverts generally put me off buying the things in them.

Doctors were targeted by drug reps, especially those working in poor areas with a large number of patients with work-related injuries causing intractable pain. They were told it was non-addictive, when trial data said the exact opposite. Once their patients were on it, getting them off the drug was almost impossible and dosage needed to rise to get the same pain relief. A great money-spinner for those with the patent at a cost of enormous human misery.

Took Miss Jiff back to see her old work place and the village near by, it was a very big shock to see every thing in a mess!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! now, wasn't tidy or even looked that no one care for anything, the village has double in size was even worse, shop boarded up litter every where, fence's falling down, so the people in the new house's don't use the local village!! as it's a mess and i can see it's going to get even worse, even our lane the now you drive out and think "what a mess no one care's" well the only tidy bit is outside our house the rest is a mess
Why is it that no one cares any more?

We could definitely do with a sad / sorry rating. I want to acknowledge some of the posts but friendly can seem a bit condescending. I often resort to rating posts as informative, which can seem a bit cold.

I've never used the Friendly rating as I'm unsure what it is meant to denote. All posts could be considered friendly if they aren't abusive or deliberately s**t stirring.
Informative is useful - never thought of it as being cold - just letting the poster know you have found their info/advice/experience interesting or helpful.
As I have never mastered the Quote, it can be a bit problematic when I agree with part of a post but disagree with the rest of it. That's my problem tho

I tend to use Friendly when someone has, for instance, reported having had a bad day. What I’d like to say is sorry that happened or what a shame.
I can see why disagree could be unhelpful. A polite response giving an alternative viewpoint could be constructive, while just being negative with no reason given never helped anyone.

I suggested some time ago that we need a "big hugs" smiley for people needing sympathy but was told that the Friendly covered that.

I would have thought the irresponsible production and distribution of addictive drugs should be classed as terrorism. Mind you, those GPs didn't have to take all the perks from the sales reps and prescribe all those drugs either. No wonder the US mistrusts Big Pharma.

Straight back to where they started the journey would be the easiest way. If you try to get into a country by air, they send you back to where you flew from.
Are they not/have not already, passing/passed a law that stops people coming in illegally from becoming uk citizens? That would be a big deterrent if they knew that before attempting the journey. I know people will always take the desperate risk but I think its a sensible partial deterrent.

Very, very rich people did the production and when taken to court, they managed to secure a deal that they would never be liable ... because they were very, very rich people.

Personally I dislike the word "terrorism". It is used by govs to manipulate people into giving up freedoms and it implies power over individuals by murderers and fanatics. I'd prefer they were just called fanatical extremists as that lays the defect with them. Telling citizens they are terrified when they should be enraged is a manipulative psychological game played by those who gain power by doing so.
