@redstar - Utter fudge! Penguins cannot ship on behalf of other countries. They have no ports or docks or means to do the paperwork to hide the origins. There are no human beings redisent on that penguin territory. In addition, Trump put 10% tariffs on Svalbard, an island which is part of Norwegian territory. Norway was given 20%. Such idiocy based on ignorance passeth all understanding. When Vance went to Greenland a few days ago he complained it was cold and no-one had told him. Doh! Only the southern tip of that huge island lies below the Arctic circle. The first Europeans to arrive and settle in the south were Norsemen in the 10th century. As for immigration - your entire nation is built on immigration! The only native Americans have had their lands seized and attempts to wipe them out and remove all their democratic rights to equality, education, decent jobs and health care. Your governments have a history of supporting autocrats and dictators in other countries, especially south America, in ways that have led their populations to despiar of ever having democratic rights so no wonder they try and gain illegal entry to the USA where they belive they will do better. Without these people your fruits and vegetables will not be harvested and you food supplies will suffer and become more expensive. As for not being an economist, yes, the west has walked into letting China become a dominant factor in world trade. Many of us in Europe and the UK worry about their increasing influence and control over 3rd world nations with huge mineral and agricultural asets but there are cleverer ways of reversing their power without bringing other economies, including your own, to their knees. You don't need to be one to understand what Trump has done to the stock markets and international trade with his tariff games. He's been seen bragging about how much money he made the other day when the markets briefly rose on his suspension of tariffs for 90 days. He'll be at it again when he thinks US Bonds are steadier and don't affect US borrowing costs. You just wait and see and don't be blind to his cunning and lack of integrity. Check your Constitution. You'l see that his recent declarations and rulings against judges doing their job are unconstutional and illegal. He doesn't give a monkey's posterior for the ordinary US citizen, just his own enrichment and that of his cronies.

Now the Trump administration is pushing to put Columbia University under a consent decree—a court-enforced agreement that would legally bind the school to federal demands, with a judge overseeing whether they “comply.” This isn’t about protecting students. It’s about sending a message: step out of line, lose your funding. Columbia has already agreed to some of their conditions—banning protest masks, increasing security, cracking down on student expression. But that’s not enough. They want control. They want precedent. And they want to use federal dollars to make universities fall in line. This isn’t normal oversight. This is federal coercion dressed up as civil rights enforcement. If the government can strip a university of funding for how it handles protests—based on political pressure—what happens to free speech? Academic independence? Dissent? This is how regimes operate. Intimidate, monitor, punish. Repeat.

Watched some heartbreaking interviews yesterday with Americans running small businesses, who are facing bankruptcy, and the loss of their homes. One woman had four months of stock remaining, and no way of paying the extra tariffs on the imports she needed to run her business. So no money will be coming in to support her family or pay her employees. And no doubt, no access to free healthcare to add to their woes. Meanwhile, Trump and his friends make a killing on the ups and downs of the stock market, which he engineered, and gloat like a pack of hyenas. Our own government isn’t innocent of knee jerk reaction without any thought to the consequences for the public. Dropping the winter fuel payment certainly had its merits, but to do that without giving those negatively affected sufficient time to apply for extra benefits was cruel. Ignoring the plight of those who just missed the cut off for compensatory benefits, while fiddling with the tax / benefit ratio that ended up with them worse off, displayed an alarming level of incompetence, in my opinion. A delay until the next winter would have given time to examine the best way to introduce the changes, and wouldn’t have cost that much, given the level of ill will and distress this all caused. And Trump has flippantly stated that manufacturing in the USA can substitute for years of complicated outsourcing technologies, just like that. OH happens to be an expert in supply chain management, and has a pretty good idea of what a ludicrous time frame Trump has inflicted on the American population, those he is bragging that he is supporting. Cruel and incompetent beyond belief.
I don't have to check it. Leaving it to the Democrats who should be doing that, but since they can't find anything to stop it, then it must not be there. The Democrats who want so much to stop him, need to find it.
Re Universities, TBH, both in the US and here there is no free speech. Students and lecturers have to think in the way they are told to over things like the trans debate. You have to subscribe to the view that a man is a woman if he says is. Plus, your body language must not give even a hint of a micro-aggression. Raise your eyebrows? Cause for dismissal. Etc, etc. So, Trump is swinging things the other way, and all we can hope is the pendulum comes to rest somewhere in the middle again one day, and Universities go back to being places where people learn to think rather than are told what they must think.
