The view from my bedroom window in the 1960s. A coking plant. In the 1950s the same coking plant was supplied with coal by an overhead line linking it to the nearest pit, which was about 5miles away. The line was a two way affair, with heavy buckets of coal going to the coking plant and empty buckets going back to the colliery. The line wasn’t fenced off in any way so bits of coal (and the occasional bucket) would fall and we kids were sent out to top up the family coal hole. Happy days. Not a word said about health and safety.

Was probably healthier in some ways, but not all.

I went to the tip with some bottles yesterday, there was a recycling artic parked across from the entrance when I arrived.
Got to the gate an out of his little hut came the gate guardian complete with clipboard and hi viz.
He checked my car registration off his list then told me to back out back out into the road as the artic needed to come in,I was about 15ft from the bottle skip ,he said you can't come in it's regulations.

So I backed out into on coming traffic.
Immediately a BMW came from the other direction and he checked that one off his list, he was allowed to stay at the gate while the artic came in.
        Double standards I think.

I remember when we first got connected. There was no broadband. We used a thing called a modem - a US Robotics modem to be exact (which I've still got somewhere). And you could either use your phone line for the internet/email or to make calls, but definitely not both at the same time. The speed was abysmal but you didn't realise it at the time because you'd got nothing to compare it with - it was all progress. All this in the good old days of Windows 3 or such-like when computers had floppy disk drives. Eeeeeh!

The film company behind "The Return" retelling of the last part of Homer's Odyssey, when Odysseus finally gets back to Ithaca`, has requested critics and reviewers not to reveal the ending.
Who outside that company doesn't already know it ends badly for the suitors.

I remember them. Well floppy they were. Probably pre-dated Windows, but then again my memory has gone the same way as many of my other faculties.

Floppies were around in the 80s. I left computing (software house) in 1989 and Windows was being written over in Seattle. Some of our very techy staff were hired to help whilst another team went to Austin to help IBM write DOS for their new PCs which were still quite hefty with Winchester drives and monitor separate from the processor box.

Outlook, Excel, Word - all still in the pipeline in 1989.
