Is there anyone else you could point out the problem to, @Jiffy, who could pass the information on? It’s hard to just stand by, especially if things could have been prevented if you had intervened. But on the other hand, sometimes it can make it worse, and you end up getting blamed. You are between a rock and a hard place.

Sadly there is no 'may set out' about it. When I worked at DWP a colleague came back in from lunch saying he'd followed somebody down the road who had a paid of crutches over their shoulder. Just before they turned the corner to head to the DWP building, they started using the crutches and struggling to walk. I'm not suggesting it's widespread, but it's highly unlikely that my colleague saw the only time it had ever happened.

I wouldn't like to be on the receiving end of the bin strike in Birmingham. However, seeing the piles of rubbish, complete with settees, fridges and various other household objects, I wonder how people got rid of these before the bin strike. They certainly won't be taken on normal bin collections where I live. Presumably they just fly tip instead.

There’s a lot of opportunistic fly tipping @KT53 just as when we had the last bin strike. However there is also a lot of selective reporting to show the worst piles of rubbish the Tv companies can find.

We saw something odd on our usual walk to the shops this morning. One of those green fibre cabinets, surrounded by barriers, but with the door wide open and several, rather wet, boxes of cables on the ground inside the barriers. No vans, no workmen and nobody in sight - on Easter Monday. Looked much like someone had been working there, finished his shift perhaps and thought sod it, I'm going home or somebody taken ill perhaps?

Vandals could have a field day.

There is a road not far from me where it looks similar to Birmingham, but all the time, no bin strike.
There are some two story flats, with gardens, and most, but not all, residents just throw anything they have finished with in the front garden, or worse still, just over the fence into the street and on the pavement, no intention of having it moved.

Furniture and old bedding is common along with kids toys, broken mirrors, you name it they throw it out.
One house does have a skip but its been overflowing with rubbish for over a year now.
Grass is 2ft high and the council does nothing.
I'd move the whole lot to some high rise ghetto and let them fester rather than giving them what are reasonable housing with garden space.

Re the Birmingham bin strike there is no bulky collection of rubbish at the moment by the council so no-one can get rid of the big stuff either. But you did have to pay for that at about £45 for 10 items. This is on top of the usual general waste collection. And the recycling (glass, tins, paper etc). And green waste collection suspended too. We have had a refund for the latter as that is a paid for service too. When it goes back to normal we shall have to pay for a bulky collection to get rid of our green waste - 20 bags for £45.

I did hear that there is a week long wait to book a slot at the tip. Can't be bothered - our car boot is small so it would take 7 weeks to get rid of our green waste.

£45 for 10 items and £45 for 20 bags seems reasonable but what happens if you only have a couple of bags.
                Is it still £45?

In the case of my council it is - there has to be a minimum charge to make it viable I should think. And my council was rather more than £45 and less than 10 items, last time I looked.

But this is a scam that seems to go on a lot, even with parking, a trend towards having a ridiculous high price but offering a service most people won't want.

Some carparkng for 6 hours at the minimum charge so you can't just buy 2 hours.

@pete £45 a bag if you only have one!

@NigelJ yes there is often white smoke coming off the bags. Deadly mould. Or brown liquid.

We have a good 20 bags of varying sizes stacked up.

There's a house round the corner from us where the front garden looks much like the worst fly tip you could even find. They also have an old minibus on the drive, packed full of junk. They now have a large van parked on the road, and there's just about room for the driver to get in. We walk past regularly and have seen the amount of rubbish in the van increase steadily. There was a large potato on the passenger seat which was there long enough to sprout and then to start to disintegrate. I don't know if it was removed or if they simply piled more rubbish on top - I suspect the latter.
