Between ourselves OH and I often call each other (and ourselves) "you stupid boy", or "you stupid woman" (as in 'Allo 'allo").

@cactus_girl and @KT53 re the will witnesses - it's more than 25 years since I made my will so perhaps the regs. have changed. It does seem a bit easier to do these days which is all to the good.

I didn't take offence, I just thought everyone should be treated equally . It was the men who didn't like being called "boys". Same with the calendars - if ones with half-naked women were allowed, then so should ones with half-naked men. They didn't much like that either!

Only half naked? When I worked in a garage, many years ago, the walls were papered with Pirelli calendars and the like. So I decided that a bit of equality was required in my office  Was pretty cross to discover that the only 'decoration' that existed in the way of muscley men was destined for.....gay men. Much the same as all the years of it being perfectly acceptable for women to flash all and everything on TV and films while the chaps were modestly covered up. I still can't get over the double-standard hypocrisy and illogic of it all!

I seem to remember that to countersigned a passport application, one had to be a professional. Wills often seem to be witnessed by the solicitor that drew them up, plus a secretary or someone in their office. We’ve just signed our neighbours new will, she got a new one after her husband passed away.

I remember one of our male zookeepers found it objectionable that all of us ( male and female) had to call the Curator and the Park Manager "Mr. so and so" when they called all their staff by their christian name. That was in the 1970/80's - has there been any change since then I wonder ?

Personally I think the old idea of having to get a so called "professional" to sign something is an insult to the rest of the population.
I can remember having to pay my doctor to sign my passport application many years ago.

Correct but it was interpreted quite loosely. I used to countersign lots of passports for staff, friends and regular customers and just put, alongside the part for profession, Managing Director. It was never questioned.

That's why I signed for them, to save them having to pay for it.

I worked at a company for many years from the 70s onwards and it was "them and us", staff on monthly salary and us idiots on weekly wages.

They even had their section in the tiny works canteen, and the woman who ran it would stop serving us if a staff member came in, and do them first.
They had a pension scheme but we didn't.
It was unbelievable the differences there were, and all working f or the same company, they had a Christmas do, but we didn't.

It was proper "I know my place" stuff.

In my work we had more females than males but everyone spent most of the day when conversing with each other joking with and being rude to each other - just as you would amongst good friends. Our regular customers also joined in. On the inside of the staffroom door I made a poster which was at eyelevel each time they left the room that said 'Be friendly, enjoy yourself and, above all, smile as you will now be on stage'.

I have been retired 25 years but still see or talk to a lot of them regularly. My attitude was that if they worked for me then they were 'family'. We have a six of them, with partners, coming round for lunch in a couple of week's time.

They also come to me if they have a problem and I just recently renegotiated a new mortgage, with their mortgage broker, for one of them. I analysed the different offers they could choose from and it ended up £50 per month cheaper. I think the broker had been trying to get them to have a more expensive one.

@shiney maybe instead of describing yourself as President of Grumpy Old Men's club you should alter it to "Old, possibly a bit grumpy at times but an Extremely Kind and Useful Person". You obviously don't keep all your expertise to yourself:star: :star:
