Were they waiting for him to come home so they could deport him?

I was chewing, gently, on a soft bit of bread and jam at breakfast time this morning when one of my heavily-filled lower molars disintegrated. Oh joy. Luckily, I have been given an appt for tomorrow am with my lovely dentist. Get out the cheque book. Sharpen the pen…

@Tidemark Snap I had a crown come out with the majority of the tooth attached Sunday pm. Rang yesterday got an appointment this morning; the remains have been removed; I was in the chair for an hour and a half, now very sore and with three stitches.
They did an X-ray initially, developed the picture and no image, repeat this time they put the X-ray source in place and bingo nice picture of roots, which then disintegrated on attempted removal.

OH has been complaining that the TV volume has been increasing recently.
I've been complaining that OH has been mumbling recently.
I've been to the local pharmacy, and hey presto, plug plants have been removed from my lugholes!!

On Sunday I saw some thick black smoke out of the window and then heard the blues and twos from some fire engines. It turned out a local church had gone up during a service. Luckily for us the wind was blowing in a direction that took the smoke and debris in a different direction to us but it was quite a blaze, it reminded me of when they lit the oil wells in Iraq, but it was only a hundred yards or so away from us.
The moan bit is that the church is behind the local shops and particularly a tesco metro store. Our reaction to the fire was to come inside, shut our windows and doors, then check to see what was actually burning but it turns out we were one of the few locals who didn't head towards the flames for a nosey. They had to cordon off the area to stop people gawping and our friend who lives closer said all these people were turning up down his street just to watch it from close range. The debris that was flying around and the all the pops and bangs didn't dent their desire to see it.

We seems to have a history of churches going up in flames around here, three by the same owner because they couldn't get planning permission for the new one they wanted to build each time. Conspiracy theorists have already started on why this one happened.

Pops and bangs is often the sound of asbestos sheet exploding in my experience.

Just this morning in the park I found this, a fire started at the base of a small tree,I can only guess they were hoping to set the whole woods on fire.

We've a history of similar fires down here, though tends to be old pubs and hotels, apply to turn into holiday flats or apartments, council says no, building burns down, insurance claimed, new application put in and council says yes.

I sometimes think there are people out there that respond to warnings.
We have had warnings that everything is pretty dry ATM so they go out to see if they can cause a fire.
It's probably teenagers in that area as they ride illegal bikes and congregation in the park in the evenings.
But nobody does anything about them, if you try you get the old story, you were young once. :frown:
Yeah, and the most we did was smoked a few cigarettes and the odd can of larger if we could afford it.

We had the same recently. An old factory had planning permission to change into residential but only if they maintained the old architecture. It wasn't long before that place burned down and they got permission for what they initially wanted.

It seems the latest con here is to build student flats because the apparently have regulations that are more lax in terms of permission but are then easy to change to perminent residence later on.

I'm waiting for the lake district or one of the national parks to go up. Over the recent years there have been more and more people wild camping and the place is littered with badly made fires. It got so much worse after lockdown when people discovered the countryside existed and they had to take a selfie of themselves out in it.
We have had wild fies not far from my house and it's pretty scary seeing the smoke on the horizon.

@pete you are also 100% right about the asbestos sheeting. The church was a glorified warehouse with an asbestos roof.

All we seem to get is HMOs, houses of multiple occupancy.
It's going to get worse as the government moves the illegals out of hotels and into, so called, mixing with communities.

@Thevictorian Destroying buildings by fire seems to be the new way of making a new planning application. There are the churches you mentioned plus 'The Crooked Pub', and a First World War hanger which mysteriously caught fire just a few days after a planning application was approved subject to the hanger being retained.

I rather think most of us can point to a building in our are where developers have applied for PP to demolish and build something else and had it refused. It later magically catches fire/collapses and the council cave in.
Not just buildings either - vacant house and garden up for sale in this village years ago. Developer put in an offer and without waiting to see whether it had been accepted or not, sent someone in to chop down a large tree which had a TPO on it. Their intention was to build 2 houses there. The developer then discovered that the land was a burgage and no building allowed so immediately backed out. Luckily a keen gardener eventually bought the property but the tree left a large hole.
Wonder whether these "accidents" will reduce over time given the relaxation on planning laws bought in by the present govt ?

Many years ago I was told the story of a somewhat 'Iffy' developer in Glasgow (I think) who applied to demolish a listed building and replace it with something totally out of keeping with the area. Permission was refused and a fire destroyed the building. He put in his application again on the basis that there was no protected building on the site. For once the council held firm and said any new building would have to have exactly the same frontage as the old building. I believe it was rebuilt on that basis, and any potential profit wiped out.
