@Obelix-Vendée It's fine for you to say you avoid flying, but for anybody in the UK who doesn't love near the east coast or the Channel Tunnel, there is little option if we want a bit of sunshine. I agree totally about the hassle at airports. We actually spend more time travelling to, or at, the airport than the time it takes to fly to our destination airport.

We’ve had a couple of short breaks this year to get some sunshine. One in Wales and one staycation at home last week. Both times we enjoyed better temperatures than some of the most popular holiday destinations. However I appreciate that we have the flexibility to time our breaks with the weather

Personally,I don’t think a desire for some sunshine or to tick off must-see sights justifies the pollution caused by flying or cruising

I think I'm in the minority as I have never had a passport and so have never left the UK in all my 70 years:thud:

@Butterfly6 Each to their own, but we love travelling and enjoying other cultures. We will continue to travel abroad as long as we are fit enough to do so. As long as other countries continue to cause millions of times more pollution on a daily basis than our 2 seats on an aircraft, that will remain my attitude.

I think the plane will still fly or the ship will sail even if your not on it.

All the time rich people preach about saving the planet, and doing totally the opposite, why should ordinary people not have their annual holiday at a place of their choosing.

I’m not saying what other people should do. That’s why I prefaced my comment with the word “personally”

Being a person that likes the beach to herself I would have a problem finding one these days. My family were spoilt back in the 1960s when we went to Penang and many other places and we were the only ones on the beach. There were no tourists at all - just us. I now appreciate how lucky we were to see such unspoilt and undeveloped places. I would hate to go to some crowded hot spot on a crowded plane. I can't see the attraction. I would rather stay at home.

Best Airline rip off I came across was - Flew to London with family presents in soft cabin bag. Placed in cage on departure and it fitted fine. Dished out presents from bag. Somehow it did not fit into cage on departure. Pointed out dent in cage. No use so I had to pay to put it into hold along with other upset passengers.
Talking about flights if a plane is overbooked why is the person in their seat dragged of the plane by security for a late comer to get their seat? Happened to my boss.

One time I was supposed to be flying Heathrow to Hanover and Network Rail had a meltdown and there were speed limits on a lot of the network. Train 3 plus hours late. flight gone, rocked up at the desk to see if there was a later flight I could catch, I explained the situation and the check in lady said no that was the last flight that day and promptly booked me onto the first flight the next morning at no charge.
I just had to get a hotel for the night.

I’m very thankful that we managed to do so many visits abroad when we were younger. I did love our many visits to the USA, bittersweet now that I don’t want to set foot in the place again. Seen most of the western National Parks, and thought nothing of flying out to San Diego in February for some winter sun.
It would take a lot to tempt me into an airport these days. Heathrow is quite a slog from here, and I do find the journey there very stressful, especially with a time restraint. Last few times, we travelled up the day before, and stayed in the excellent Sofitel, just a short stroll from the check in desks the next morning! We’ve also flown from our little local airport ( 15 minutes away) to Dublin, and flown to the states from there.
We have a cruise from Southampton in the near future, that’s about as lengthy a car journey as I’m comfortable with, and checking in and boarding is a breeze compared with an airport.

I’m obviously seeing too many adverts, despite doing my best to ignore them. Has anyone else noticed that the same ‘actors’ are popping up in multiple adverts for different products? The old guy enjoying the freedom of his folding wheelchair, is evidently still capable of running along a river bank chasing his rescue dog. At least he was able to get a good deal on a second hand car! Is there a shortage of extras signed up with advertising agencies? Or are all the ads churned out by the same two or three companies? Annoying, as all the products will have to go on my ‘ do not buy’ list, which gets longer by the day.

My neighbour butchered the bottom half of a beautiful 25ft conifer yesterday leaving stumps on the trunk. Today they extended their light pollution further and rapped an electric cable with lights attached round the stumps. It's like Blackpool and the lights are on all day, every day. :mute:
