Anyone live near this area. We have been invited to attend with our car. So come on by and look for us. Husband and I and Sasha our car. Good excuse for me to get new outfits, LOL. https://www.cobblebeachconcours.com/
think about it, if successful, it could be a way we want all our government folks to think, for the people. And would you not all want that.
Thank you, but no thank you. I shall never visit the USA again. I was stopped for jay walking on my last visit there (jay walking is a national sport here) so my cards are marked. No doubt I would be denied entry anyway as a “dangerous person”.
The definition of a Politician appears to be one or all of the following .......... One versed in the science of government . One engaged in political life or statesmanship . One interested in party politics. One who makes a profession or game of politics . A polite person . There is also An intriguer (US). Sounds as if life in the US is perfect and improving by the minute. Not entirely convinced that paradise there was suddenly achieved in just 4 months but what do I know ? Apologies @redstar I hadn't intended to argue but there are limits
What a hoot you are. Lived here all my life, never caught jay walking, don't know anyone that was caught jay walking. I am guessing I did it often somewhere, as crossing any street in USA that word was furthest from my mind. But with common sense I would not cross a 10 lane fast freeway, if you did that then, Wow. Are you referring to my statement of Cobble Beach, that area is in Canada. CANADA, not USA.
@Tidemark your experience sounds interesting. Altho over the years I have had several American friends, the USA has never struck me as being a welcoming country as such. In 1975, I had been invited to visit my long standing Pen Pals in Hawaii. I had to apply for a tourist visa ( fair enough ) but the visa people at the US Embassy in London were extremely suspicious and unpleasant to deal with. I was married ( so why was I travelling on my own ? ), I was emplyed ( ah, but you could be wanting to live and work here whilst pretending to be on holiday ) and so it went on. I did manage to get a visa in the end but Welcome to America ??? Some 20 or so years later, my OH was working in Chile and his flight to London was diverted to New York. No visa for America and he was give similar treatment by the airport officials........ why was he there and prove you aren't intending to stay here illegally. I enjoyed my stay in Hawaii but find it laughable that American officialdom was convinced either myself or my OH actually wanted to live there.
See how people jump at conclusions without reading stuff. Just because I am from USA does not mean I only stay in USA. SMH.
@redstar What you need is one of those Social Media Influencers - swap Trump for a cosmetically enhanced person - someone ( man or woman ) with huge lips, giant biceps/breasts, no obvious waistline and legs which stretch from neck to toes. Add a forehead tattoo "bugger off you lot". That should frighten off most immigrants - legal or otherwise PS think we're getting into the realms of fantasy here . PPS Can you explain SMH for me ?
I never said that you did. I said that I shall never visit the land of the free and the home of the brave again. SMHT
I would because I never would even think of getting involved in the politics of a country I was visiting. If you go to another country you should expect to abide by their rules. And yes, I remember being told by immigration officials to stay behind that line, until called forward and checked I wasn't up to no good. It wasn't something that bothered me, just wish we were a bit more particular about who gets into the UK. Even got a Ukrainian pyromaniac in custody now.
L Last year we were crossing from USA to Canada and the border guards decided it was our turn to have our whole car looked at and our luggage. I had to deal with one of them pouring out my Vit D tables in his dirty palm and asking what are these? So for me again needing to get to Canada this September, not to happy about it. Even when coming from another country back to the USA we Americans have to stay behind a line until called, that's normal in my mind. I recall about 50 years ago a friend of mine wanted to go live in Scotland and she said they require people with a 4 year degree to become citizens, was that true, no clue, but if so that is what all countries should require.
I've always found that immigration or border officers are very staid and frankly devoid of personality. They're supposed to be and I don't take it as a reflection of the country; as a UK citizen I get the same treatment returning to the UK. Once in-country (lots of, and all continents), I have always found the locals to be reciprocative of how you approach them and generally on the friendly side. Skip past politics and everyone just wants to rub along, work and play. People seem to get hung up on reported stories (which may or may not be total rubbish) instead of traveling, visiting places and using actual experience and interactions to base their opinion on.
Anyhoo. A little observation that I'm certain hasn't passed us all by, this is not a political forum; we don't encourage discussion of it and are wholly cognisant of how divisive it can be. This thread was started as a means to express a Victor Meldrew 'I don't believe it!' type of dialogue and it's taken a direction away from that. It might be that we admins call a close as, as has been repeatedly demonstrated, we're not going to solve global democracy here and bashing political stances simply isn't constructive on a gardening forum. Something to ponder.
@Loofah I think it would be a mistake to close the topic because of the political content. All conversation I have read has been completely reasonable and informative. People have had differing opinions without being abused for them. All too often in society as it is today, any comment which disagrees with another is met with cries of some sort of 'ism'. That hasn't been the case here.
