    Hello

Hoping somebody with more knowledge than me can advise on my current situation.

I had a back lawn in a bit of a state. It had some new turf a couple of years ago but with poor under soil I ended up with a roller coaster in that area and what with a female dogs urine and other garden issues I've ended up with a lawn in need of work.

I decided to re seed when the weather allowed and did this a couple of weeks ago, so went through what I thought was a good routine of Mow, Scarify, Aeration, weed, seed, top soil for lawn level and feed, with a lawn lute to make sure level and seed to soil contact.

I've been watering every day since, but have ended up with a lawn full of mainly weeds.

On reading up I find my new top soil was probably the culprit and am wondering if another weed and seed would rectify? Or is it now too late?

Will attach a couple of pictures when I can work out how.

    Many thanks in advance

    Phil

    Hi Phil

When you say (weed) do you mean hand weed or use a product to kill the weeds ?

if a weed killer , you need to leave minamum 5/6 weeks before you can sow seed as the chemical burns the new roots on the grass seed

If you used a weed and feed product, they contain a chemical which prevents seed germination. This affects weed seeds but also grass seed, for up to six weeks after application. It doesn’t sound as if it killed the weeds in your topsoil though! Check the application rates and try again would be my advice and wait for six weeks before reseeding.

Hi many thanks again for the reply, I didn't use a weed and feed product as such I was informed the Top soil should provide some form of growth for the seed..as well as a level for the lawn, maybe I was mis informed there?

I think you may be right about the topsoil being contaminated with weed seed. Last year the two deliveries of compost that I received also delivered some new weeds .

I have used weed and feed products on my lawn most years and have found that they work effectively.

I was going for Compost instead of Top Soil, at least I feel better about that choice now :)

Yes, topsoil is better for grass seed. I also put a thin layer on top of the seed and then walk on it to ensure it is in contact with the soil below. This also hides the seed from birds, apart from pigeons .
