      @Mrs Hillard, Gorgeous roses - especially Desdemona.

      My brother gave me one for my birthday last year - it has already grown quite tall and is just flowering now. I'm wondering how long I can keep it in a pot?

        @lizzie27
        Thanks Lizzie, nice to talk with you again. Desdemona will be fine in a pot 18 x 18'' for a few years I should think, bit of topping up each year. One of my favourites and best performers here every year, I wouldn't be without this one.

          Here are a couple of photos of my Agatha Christie roses:
          IMG_0472.jpeg IMG_0473.jpeg

          On my allotment I have a Westerland rose, which smells amazing. I picked a few flower heads from it last week, but they were looking a bit tired today so I’ve picked off the petals to dry now: IMG_0471.jpeg
          I collect and dry rose petals to try making rose water with and maybe other things.

          I also have three different red roses, two in the garden and one at the allotments. I’m not sure of their names, I’d have to check my notes.
          And also five Violet Perfume roses, bought this year, which thankfully are thriving, but are still too young/small to give flowers.

          When buying roses, do you primarily go for how it grows, what colour they have or the fragrance?

            I can’t remember the last time I actually bought a rose. I just cadge a tiny cutting from someone who has one that could do with a prune. :)

                Just to say @lizzie27 I grow all my roses in pots and with plenty of food and water and the right soil they do very well. On GW we had a poster, marlorena who gave me some excellent advice about the correct soil mix. She really knew her roses.

                        You don't see 'Agatha Christie' rose very often these days, lovely big blooms..

                        and 'Clarence House' is superb. A good scent as I recall, I had it a while ago..

                        @Pete8
                        I'd say your rose is 'Albertine' looking at that,.. always popular despite the short season, and yours is glorious..

                        'The King's Rose' arrived today.. not in flower yet, but lots of buds to open.. due to its unusual colourations, I think it would look nice with some French lavender, Salvia caradonna, or purple Phlox..

                        ..this is 'Pacific Crest'..
                        IMG_6328.JPG
                        ..first bloom on 'Bathsheba'.. with first flower on Clematis 'Niobe' in background..

                        ..the above rose is 'Lilac Bouquet'.. large shrub or climber..

                              Thanks @Mrs Hillard - It's not Albertine. I can't recall its name atm, but you did identify it for me when we were at 'the other place' a couple of years ago - and I've forgotten... like I do with many things these days :biggrin: It'll come back to me at some time.
                              It has no noticeable scent but the large orange hips persist over winter.
                              It may be a climber, but could also well be an out of control shrub rose.

                              You may recall my latest additions - 3 x The Garland on my pergola from when we were at 'the other place'.
                              It's year 5 now and it's laden with buds, so will post a pic when it's out.

                              Yous are looking fab as they always do :dbgrtmb:

                                whoops ... memory lapse.. I can see now the foliage is not correct for Albertine... did I say 'Mme. Gregoire Stachelin'? [aka Spanish Beauty]...
