                    First rose to open this season, this one is a completely new one to me - Peter’s Persica. Beautiful so far with lovely foliage and I do like the darker centre. I’m planning to train it as a climber - very thorny though.

                    Would be curious to know how long do the flowers last on the King’s Rose.

                      I've been experimenting with some open flowered roses this year, mainly Persica varieties. These are at various stages of development.

                      Amethyst Star, a velvety purple with white interior streaks, fragrant.

                      Catherine, buds are orange, flower develops to a cerise pink with red interior blotches.

                      Warm Welcome, a small climbing rose, started opening today.

                        @Plantminded what lovely roses, more than I thought you had actually.. have you been converted?..

                        Re. 'Amethyst Star'.. which is aka 'Special Brother'.. note the rather fine olive green foliage and virtually thornless stems.. It's a very nice rose, and those purple blooms stand out from afar..

                        @pitter-patter
                        that rose is quite new I think.. I'll let you know how long the blooms last on King's Rose.. probably not very long..

                          @wiseowl than you for your reply. In spite of frequently visiting birds, I have never seen them go anywhere near my roses let alone eat my greenfly, the only thing that I have seen in the past, but is rare nowadays are ladybirds, they are great at munching away on the aphids. If I see one I take from one rose to the other.

                          Thank you @Mrs Hillard. I grew some roses when I moved here nearly 12 years ago but without much success due to my sandy soil. I have since improved it and thought that these slightly wild roses wouldn't object so much :). So far they are doing very well. I have 5 in borders and 1 in a container. I bought them from Style Roses as bare roots and am following their very strict instructions!

                          You are right about Amethyst Star, the foliage is very attractive, the stems almost thornless and there are multiple purple blooms, plus a distinct rose fragrance.
