@ViewAhead In a perfect world where everybody could trust everybody else 100% of the time, your suggestion might work. Sadly we don't live in that utopia, we live in a world where 'might is right' and have to do our best to protect ourselves. I simply do not accept your view that money is funnelled into arms production intentionally to make a few people rich.

It's the other guy that really annoys me. He throws his room key onto the counter in front of the receptionist and continues to talk on the phone. Arrogant *****

 

My moan for today is that my car breakdown cover renewal came in - £280.00. Changed company for under a hundred with same details. Phoned to cancel policy and after a lot of chit chat over the phone I was told they could reduce it to £80.00. I still cancelled it as I do not like all this haggling. Some people do but I do not.

 

@waterbut Mine doubled my fee; so I rang them up and a nice chap after a bit of a chat reduced it to about £20 more than last year.
They just try it on.

 

@ViewAhead your ideas are good but a tad naive as they don't account for human idiocy and greed and pure insanity.

They'd be fine if Gorbachev and Obama were the norm for presidents in Russia and US - rational, educated, methodical men who value peace as a means to prosperity - but they don't allow for nasties like Putin, Stalin before him and Trump now. They use lies, deceipt, fear and propaganda to steer their populace and armed and police forces to oppress and control their own citizens whilst advancing their own plans for territorial expansion.

Making sure our own countries have allies and are sufficiently prepared to defend ouselves and each other is no more irrational or wasteful than you making sure your doors and windows are closed and locked before bedtime or going away and that you have watchful neighbours or an alarm system in case of unwanted intruders.

Russia, by the way, is a historical invader, always wanting more resources, more control -

 

The whole point of the ad is that the bloke on the phone is supposed to be arrogant, and the bloke with the big teeth is mister nice guy.
Mister nice guy gets the cheap room.

 

We don't see ads. Anything we want to watch on a commercial channel gets recorded so we can FF past the cr*d. Saves a lot of time.

 

I agree there is idiocy, greed and insanity at play, @Obelix-Vendée. I just don't believe we have to accept these as OK.

 

No @ViewAhead but until people are all born with no unpleasant personality defects such as sociopaths and psychopaths we all need to stay vigilant and plan for self defence.

 

The problem is the ones that wage war and send others to their deaths are the ones the furthest from the battlefields. Bunker grandpa and Mr bone splints would never be anywhere near the action.

Humanity will always invent more ingenious ways to do each other in.

No respect or care for others who give their lives in combat, often sent there by non combattant senior officers safe back at "strategic HQ" or used as cannon fodder for the latest advances in warfare technology.

 

Because they can't be bothered to think of something a bit different. A few years ago the postman delivered me a parcel which had part of my email address on it. He was intrigued and knowing me fairly well asked where it came from. I explained and with raised eyebrows he went on his way.
