I was mowing the lawn this morning, the new lawn that was seeded only last year with all new top soil and came across this thing at the edge of the lawn,

When I first pulled on it the top snapped off

I tried pulling it out with no luck, I got the spade out and dug round it and still no luck, its looks like it’s well rooted in, I don’t want to break the stem off

    it's a good 300mm long

Any idea what it could be?

@Mollydog Yes. It's a bamboo shoot and a runner. I would definitely investigate further and if you don't have bamboo have a look over the fence to see if it's from the neighbours.
Now you've snapped the top off that one it won't grow any more.

It looks like bamboo. Has your neigh our got any? Or have you got a patch somewhere. They can send runners underground

I don’t have any bamboo shoots in my garden, I’ll ask next door when I next see them, the shoot is around 600mm from the fence between me and my neighbour, just at the tip of the lawn edge

As last year I rotated the old lawn (where I was seeding the new lawn) followed by in placed a good 200mm + of topsoil I was surprised to see this shoot pop up, having cut the top off is it now safe and not grow or is there more I have to do?

My fear was it could of been Japanese knotweed

Bamboo is almost as bad :rolleyespink: Youll want to (or ask the neighbour to) install a bamboo barrier to stop it leaving its enclosure.

As luck would have it the neighbours are away for a week (maybe two) so I’ve took some images of what looks like some sort of reeds/bamnoo on the other side of the fence in line with the shoot in my lawn

If the shoot is bamboo, if I cut the shoot under the lawn will it stop growing up through my lawn or would I need to do more?

Might be a bit late for my neighbour to install a bamboo barrier if the roots are already in my garden, I might have to do this on my side of the garden, if only they didn’t come up through my lawn I’d be happy for some free bamboo’s

Yep, it's bamboo. More shoots will arrive, even though you cut that one off. It really won't be free bamboo stakes because of all the work they'll cause!

@Mollydog certainly looks like bamboo to me.
The one you have cut off won't grow any more.
Pity that the bamboo appears to be up against the fence.
You could put a root barrier on your side of the fence, depending on access.

The tall clump of foliage in the centre looks like black stemmed bamboos. Nigra. It looks like a different variety on each side.

Thank you for this help, I hope if anymore shoots want to pop up they do it just outside my lawn, nothing wrong with free bamboo shoots :)

Just keep an eye on them. If grown in favourable conditions, running bamboos can become problematic without proper maintenance or control.
