I have been given 5 Nerine Bowdenii bulbs and reading some websites it appears they like poor soil and a sunny position which isn't aproblem for my garden. What I am confused about is the number of different bits of advice for planting times - can I plant them now? Thanks in advance for any replies-much appreciated.

Well, I would plant them after the frost are finished.
They seem to be an odd one for our climate and I think they are summer dormant.

So a real hot spot is needed, although perhaps not necessary, with the neck of the bulbs on the surface, dont bury them too deep.

You shouldn't see much action until autumn.

Been transplanting some of mine in the last week. Neck and shoulders of the bulb above ground and you're good to go

Thinking of planting some Nerine bulbs after seeing them on Gardeners World last year, need a bit of advice is it too early to plant? I looked online at buying some and they seem quite pricy about £1.50 to £2.00 each? So I have some bowl pots, how many would I need to put in a bowl pot?

Really depends on the size of the bowl. Maybe put up a photo. Despite being a bit on the tender side I can grow them successfully in Scotland as long as there is very good drainage. The bulbs are relatively expensive as they do not multiply quickly like say daffodils.
They don’t mind being crowded and tend to grow on top of each other, ie some bulbs in time are not even in contact with the soil.
Personally I transplant them after they have died down in late autumn but I have transplanted them in full leaf too.
I believe other varieties to Bowdenii are not so hardy. Mine survived through -18oC in 2010/11! I like them as they flower very late, about end of September here when most other things in the garden have conked out for the season.

A house up the road from me has had a fantastic display of these in the front garden for years, I noticed the old boy who lived there has died earlier in the year and the house has been sold.

So probably all be under tarmac at some point.:frown:
