These appeared amongst the Cosmos. At first I thought they were a rogue seedling that had got in amongst the plug plants, but on closer inspection the leaves appear to be cosmos.

Is this fasciation, or does anyone recognise what plant this is please ?

    Definitely not fasciation.
Yellow flowers look like Craspedia globosa...they can have very long flower stems.
Leaves may be buried underneath Cosmos leaves.
Can you double check stem and leaves.

This an example of fasciation from my garden.
      Fasciation 3.JPG

The fasciated part is the strap like stem that looks as if it's been belted with a mallet.

      Thanks @Silver surfer and @NigelJ .
I didn't think it was fasciation as they bear no resemblance to cosmos whatsoever.
I will have a look and see if I can delve down into the centre. My OH usually does the deadheading and they are right in the middle of the bed, so I might pass the responsibility on to him .

My OH cut down to the base. The leaves look very cosmos-like.

        Fascinating.

Leaves and calyx look correct for Cosmos.
Been searching for other plants with no luck.

        Found this...
What's wrong with my plant? : Garden : University of Minnesota Extension

This is a Cosmos grower Jonathan Sheppard...who no longer uses peat..in this link there are plants that look similar to yours.
I would suggest you contact him.
Maybe he has had similar experience.

Jonathan is an amateur grower and can be contacted on 07973 919032 or

Well i did put the link up.:biggrin:

One symptom of Aster Yellows is deformed flowers without petals (phyllody, which is the development of leaf-like flower petals). This phytoplasma disease is difficult to control and there is no cure. Infected plants should be removed and destroyed if you suspect this is the reason for your petalless flowers.

Oh dear so sorry it a disease..a nasty one to by the sound of it.
It would be horrendous if it spread/affected a whole field of wheat or similar.

              Quote from www.

"Aster yellows is a plant disease caused by a phytoplasma, a type of bacteria lacking a cell wall, called Candidatus Phytoplasma asteris. It affects a wide range of plants, including vegetables, ornamentals, and grains, causing symptoms like yellowing, stunting, and flower deformities. The disease is spread by leafhoppers, specifically the aster leafhopper (Macrosteles quadrilineatus), and can overwinter in infected plants and leafhoppers. "
