Pronouncing plant names

    I say clematis with a short a and no real emphasis on any syllable. My sister says clemAtis, also a short A but emphasised. I know other people who say clemAYtis. And tomAYto. It doesn't matter as long as we all know what we mean.

      It's not just the plant world. When I was culturing corals we had plenty of scientific name changes to deal with and you then had to put up with a tremendous about of variation. The worst was Scolymia, a doughnut shaped coral that can look like a kid got loose with a box of crayons on your wall, was changed to Homophyllia, which to me isn't a great name for a rainbow coloured coral.

        My father always referred to anemones as 'annymoans'. Said that way indicated the correct way to spell it, as so many people got it wrong, and called them 'anenomies'

                        I made two dozen of those yesterday. With an 'e' on the end and no double 'n' it should be scone not scon.
