Does the size of your estate make it visible from the Space Station, @shiney?

If I understand it right, state pension is taxable, it's just that the amount is less than the standard tax allowance (at the moment anyway). It doesn't take much other income or tax code reduction for any reason, to push a person into paying tax.

If you want to take your car to Europe it now required a 'UK' sticker rather than a 'GB' one.

We have Great Yarmouth nearby, which I think is named after the river (Yare) reaching the sea there (mouth of the river). It's a real run down area with turd coloured water in the estuary and not a very great place anymore.

Maybe they should add some ironic punctuation. Great Yarmouth? Great Yarmouth!

If it's good enough for Westward Ho! ... ;)

I did see a car with a GB sticker just a couple of weeks ago and assume it's been abroad a while. Don't know what the northern Irish put on their cars before the change @KT53.

Perversely, Great Britain is just England, Scotland and Wales. United Kingdom refers to GB and Northern Ireland. These are political entities.

The British Isles are a geographical entity which encompasses mainland Britain (an island) plus the island of Ireland and all the little ones from Scilly in the south to the tip of Shetland and all the Orkneys, Hebrides and other bits and bobs off the main islands.

The Channel islands are geographically part of France but, like the Isle of Man, are Britisg Crown dependencies.

I don't know why just having the symbol on your number plate isn't enough.

Can't see the point of stickers anymore.

I tend to stick to England if asked.
If you say you are British it could mean anything.

Sadly, that's true of many seaside town now. Many years ago we went to Paignton on a regular basis. We were in the area a couple of years ago and decided to visit. Paid for 2 hours parking but were back in the car within 20 minutes. I have never seen so much rubbish and so many dossers in one place in my life.

I suppose if you’re homeless the pavements in Paignton are a bit warmer than those in Perth or Papplewick.

@pete It depends on where you were born.

OH is English - born there and with English born parents and grand-parents.

I am British - mix of English, Scottish, Irish and Danish and born abroad so even if my parents were all English I'd still be British.

@KT53 lots of coastal towns have suffered from a lack of investment.

Mr Spock said it could be seen from Vulcan. :noidea:

I can't verify that as I haven't been there during any of my travels.

Well you can say British and I can say English although it really seems to be something that is not acceptable, unlike saying you are Scottish, Welsh or Irish.

I dare say if I was to go back far enough I'd find I'm not totally English but it is of no cosiquence to me.
I just use the country I was born in.

Of course it's acceptable if you're a known mixture, like me.

Given its history, the whole of the British Isles population is made up of immigrants beginning with farmers who moved in after the last Ice Age - Celts, Picts, Angles, Saxons, Vikings seeking a place to live. Then there are the conquerors like the Romans and Normans and later religious refugees such as Sephardic Jews from Spain and Portugal, the Flemish protestants and French Huguenots.

You'd need a DNA test to establish what unknown mix anyone is.
