I've had Virgin for 25yrs and they laid underground cables in the street back then, the cable from the street may not be fibre ATM but it would, I assume, be fairly easy to make it so.

They dont dig up your driveway they run it overground from the street to your house, its much neater than overhead cables.

Thanks for everybody's views on broadband packages, most interesting.

We were originally with Plusnet but as they 'lost' all our emails for over 4 months and couldn't rectify the situation at all and wouldn't offer any compensation, we moved to BT.

We'll probably never get full fibre as there is no pavement near the house.

It would seem being called the British Isles would make sense. No mention of the Channel Islands though.

      A quote from the web...

The British Isles are an archipelago in the North Atlantic Ocean off the north-western coast of continental Europe, consisting of the islands of Great Britain, Ireland, the Isle of Man, the Inner and Outer Hebrides, the Northern Isles (Orkney and Shetland), and over six thousand smaller islands. 8 They have a total area of 315,159 km 2 (121,684 sq mi) 5 and a combined population of almost 72 million, and include two sovereign states, the Republic of Ireland (which covers roughly five-sixths of Ireland), 9 and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

France has a huge fibre project. In towns and cities roads and streets have been dug up to lay it underground but round here, with 9 homes along a 2km country lane, it's cheaper to go overhead. We've had ours over a year now. I only do emails, web searches and this forum but OH does games and Possum streams books and films plus online classes and has noticed a distinct improvement.

Our provider is Orange and it includes a modem plus a wide range of French and other TV channels which we never use as our TV is connected to Sky. We also have a "landline" thru the modem and our mobile phones all as part of the contract.

My phone is simple and only used for texts and a few calls. 8€ a month. Internet/TV/landline phone and OH's mobile cost 70€ a month. Adding Possum's phone was another 26€ but she does lots of streaming film and smart stuff. No idea about competitor rates as this is OH's province, not mine.

@Sheal the Channel islands are close to France. They used to be part of William the Conqueror's lands so became English ruled and stayed that way after Normandy became French again. As Crown dependencies, the UK is responsible for their security and international relations.

It was Tidemark that mentioned the Channel Islands @Obelix-Vendée, which induced my response. :) Thanks for the info on the islands - are they French or English speaking?

We have very slow broadband but we only use it for emails and logging on to some sites such as GC. Our download speed has now gone up to 15 Mbps and upload is 1.7 Mbps. :rolleyespink:

Now, don't quote me on this, but I seem to remember when my sister moved away from BT internet there was an option to keep her email open with them for a monthly charge (about £6, I think), to save all the faff of alerting contacts.

Interesting thought but we have five email accounts, so does that mean £30 per month? Not that we ever have any trouble with our emails :fingers crossed:.

We have about 3,000 email addresses in the address books  but we guess that at least half of them may be no longer relevant.

Things are rather old around here (including myself) and I don't think we have any other choice for internet, at a reasonable price, as there is no offer from other companies apart from one that recently used the BT telephone poles to run a fibre cable. Their prices are about three times what we are paying BT.

We still have the copper cable that we used to share with the neighbour. Anybody remember 'shared lines'? :heehee:

I remember in the '60s being on a "party line". Don't know if that was a Northern expression?

@shiney, I'm not sure if 5 email accounts would equal 5x the fee. Probably, knowing BT.

@Bluejayway, the term "party line" was definitely in use on the south coast in the 1980s.

Big fuss cos Navratilova was not allowed entry to a posh restaurant at Wimbledon because she had her pet dog in her handbag! I'm sorry, but a tennis tournament is no place for any pooch bar a guide dog, full stop. I'm horrified she even got through the gates with it. :th scifD36:
