Why? I don't follow the logic here.

If you read her comment properly she uses the water from boiling beetroot and no we do not get salty tap water.

How does this harm them? Plants regularly get bird and insect droppings on them.
Is your mains supply hard or soft water.
If you don't know check your suppliers website the information will be there.
The really simple answer, assuming your supply is hard water, is be careful when watering and apply the water to the soil and don't get it on the leaves.

I just use tap water. My plants seem to do well enough. Maybe they'd be amazing if I gave them filtered water or whatever. I'll never know because they can take tap or do without.

Why would this colour the plants?
Do you have a water softener?

Because beetroot contains betacyanin, a pigment which colours plants red….this is present in the water beetroot is cooked in.

Yes, but this is a relatively large molecule and would not normally be taken up by plant roots.

I use the water that my tumble drier collects in its container. I have always imagined that it’s distilled water but I may be wrong. No harm done so far. :)

Do not worry the white spots are just a touch of the dreaded lurgy. Just follow the advice here and they will soon be cured.

:wow: from the replies it seems that noone is bothering to use distilled or deionised water . I thought someone would be using it (not for the carnivorous plants). I guess we are ok exposing plants to the minerals in tap water

i didnt say it would harm them its just i dont like white spots on the leaves. In any case i dont have white spots ive decided its more transparent but that wasnt really the point of the question. I always try to water the soil but some of the plants are very leafy so a few times its very hard to avoid the leaves when trying to get to the soil. Ive even invested in a special shaped watering can for this . I have been told that its silly to do this as when it rains the leaves get wet

I reckon if it wasn't OK, gardening would be a much less popular activity.

Given the air pollution these days, there's probably quite a bit of "stuff" in our rain water too - when we actually get any rain of course. Perhaps @NigelJ may know a bit more on this ?
@hi2u_uk I think you are being over careful and wasting money but it is your choice. If you and your plants are happy, then continue :)
