A rather alarming article! :hate-shocked: Now, I don't object to water meters (I voluntarily had one fitted) and even people paying a higher rate for water use above a certain amount seems fair to me. But this article suggests a smart water meter could be used to fine people whose usage did not drop during a hosepipe ban. But ... if you never use a hosepipe in the first place, how could you drop your usage? And in a heatwave, regular usage is likely to rise, not fall, even without a hose.

Hadn't realised "smart" water meters even existed. We've had water meter for 30 years or so both here and in Europe but none were smart. Bad enough with the electric supplier keep harassing us about fitting a smart meter - I really hope the water supplier isn't going to start on the same journey

Smart water meters certainly exist. We switched to metered supply quite recently and had a couple of e-mails detailing our usage. That actually resulted in the monthly payments being reduced. Great news as the original monthly payment was only about half of what we paid each months before changin to metered supply from council tax based. (Hope that makes sense).

We changed from council tax based water charges to metered charges and our water bill dropped by about 40% but that was the old type meter. The other month they installed a Smart meter and if they start charging extra for water during drought conditions then we shall pay it - not necessarily in good grace.

It is because of the control that Smart metering can have on electricity charges (ask @CanadianLori about that) we refuse to have a Smart electricity meter. I have it in writing from our power company that they won't force us to change the meter but that may become necessary if the meter runs off the scale by it having reached the highest number it can show. I'm hoping that it will just roll over to zero and start again. :fingers crossed:

Every house in our area had smart water meters installed a couple of years ago and no one had any choice about it. They track usage but if you pay a fixed amount it doesn't really affect you. They claimed they were partially there to detect leaks but they only seemed concerned when the leak is on the customers property.

Locally they have stopped farmers irrigating their crops and limit the amount they can remove from rivers in the winter. The lack of rain capture is the biggest problem with all the infrastructure seemingly designed to get it to reach the sea as quickly as possible.

its crazy, they give you money to buy the car and then slap a crazy tax on it for the following years.
                    Total waste of money.

All cars should be taxed the same and if they subsidise one then they should do the same for everyone

Doesn't fit in with net zero,:roflol: but then not much of what this crazy government does, apart from taxing us into oblivion.

I'm not a believer we will get to net zero, but a heck of a lot of money will be siphoned off by the few whilst govs pretend we can.

Talk about a total waste of time. Yesterday my GP surgery sent me this message "
To help us keep your medical record up to date, please complete some questions about your health habits." and included a link to a questionnaire with one question which was about smoking habits. Now I have never smoked and in every questionnaire I've filled in for the NHS or anyone else; that has been my response for the past 40+ years, which part of the answer don't they understand. Next time I speak to a GP, dentist, chiropractor, have a hospital appointment at some point they will ask the same question. Can't they just read the records or talk to each other, the answer is there.
Perhaps I should have it tattooed across my forehead.
