All great if you can - it is not the car, it is the financing thereof that kills it for many folks.

No reason why not - that is, unless the lunatics in charge ban the fuel it runs on.

I've got a hybrid at the moment, as a courtesy car whilst the diesel is in for repair. It's a plug in hybrid Ford kuga which at first I really liked, I can charge it for free with our solar panels and because most of our use is around town we have hardly used any petrol. It switches to petrol if I put my foot down or go further than 30 miles, ideal I thought. But in the winter my panels won't generate enough for a car charge and I'm having to plug it in just about every day.

The main disadvantage of hybrids is the extra complications of two motors, carrying bigger batteries and losing storage space, there is no front storage like on a full EV. I wouldn't want one outside of the manufacturers warranty period there are so many more things to go wrong and be serviced.

All your arguments in favour of EV are valid, but the reality is that we won't be in the market for a £20k+ vehicle, petrol or EV. I can see main dealers advertising 3 year old Hyundai and Kia for around the £11k mark, so after 3 years I would have a car with some residual value although I have kept my past 3 cars for about 10 years each.

It depends on the size of vehicle you are looking at of course and therein lies the problem for most folks now. To cover all of our uses, I am looking for a fairly large SUV, hence the price is north of £20k or even more... to go EV at that level would almost certainly add a third on to the price currently, so is a non-starter.

I am also wholly unconvinced that an EV is the one-size-fits-all solution that they are being touted as.. not least as I've seen the realities involved in running them with the fleet at work.

Its times like this when I look back and think how uncomplicated life was in the 70s and 80s, you just went out and bought the car you could afford and wanted, no stupid rules and restrictions.
You could even go places without road works on every corner.
Why does everything seem so difficult these days, I'm sure its not me, its how they are making it.

And therein is exactly why the auto industry in the western world is dying on it's arse - basically a victim of over-regulation and over-taxation.

I think they could end up killing golden goose, the tax raised from motorists has escalated so much over the years, but we have soldiered on and paid it.

Something different is happening now and they seem to be actively trying to force you off the road unless you have a company car or a millionaire.

Speed cameras on every road, all raising revenue, confusing signage at no go areas at certain times, buses only, cameras at yellow boxes mainly to raise money.

Massive hikes in parking charges and penalties, people being sold residents parking permits although they know there is nowhere for them to park.

Soon it will be parking only outside your own house if you have a charger installed, for those with no driveway, I'm sure they will invent an extra charge for the privilege.

Public transport is a joke, rail fares are confusing and exorbitant, its all going to grind to a halt soon.

They're pushing their luck with taxation generally to be honest to the point that folks are starting to wonder why they are even bothering going out to work etc. The social contract is pretty badly broken.

                              Hi,

In the fifties and sixties all we worried about was if our car was going to be a pile of rust after it rained; Alfa Suds were top rusters?

                              Kind regards, Col.
