After cooking for myself for over 300 days a year for nearly 50 years. It gets a bit tedious so the occasional take away, meal out is fine in my book.
My maths is terrible, but I reckon I’ve cooked 18,350-odd meals for the two of us and I have come to prefer my own kitchen and my own lack of hygiene to that of others. I can’t remember the last meal I ate in a restaurant, cafe, or take away.
Unlike a lot of people I'm completely omnivorous, with absolutely no dietary requirements either medically imposed or self selected.
I agree re the endless cooking @NigelJ . Cooking for young children/family etc for decades leaves you a bit fed up with it all. I don't really buy takeaways, but the odd 'instant' type of meal leaves you time for other things. I can also understand why families with very little money were buying ready meals from cheapo outlets, because it was more economical to buy those and heat them in a microwave than cooking from scratch. It's despicable that we have that situation though.
I have cooked about double that - or more if you count meals that we had that were different to each other. . Or even more if you count meals I cook for other people. It's a hobby so not a chore. Of course some of those have been bulk cooking.
There's nothing wrong with the occasional takeaway. It's when it becomes the standard way of eating that, for me, it becomes a problem. As others have said, it's also an expensive way to eat, but I would bet that many of those who plead poverty are living that way. We eat out once a week and I'll have what I fancy then, although I tend not to like rich food much any more so it's not a problem.
I reckon I've cooked 16,000 meals for the two of us, but that would be just the one meal a day. So if you add on breakfast and lunch it's triple that. And then there's a snack at tea time and at about 11pm. Fish and chips here cost £21 for two. So we restrict that to bank holidays. Otherwise we eat out say once a year and that would be a curry and they are good value for money. Yes I do get sick of cooking.
I wish there was a way to tell my weather app when it is wrong so it could adjust its proclamations. Today is going to be dry according to it ... and yet the rain is currently torrenting down, with random lightning. I have just returned from a 90 min walk. Had I been out a couple of minutes longer, I would have been absolutely drenched!
Heavens, are they even thinking down there? You threaten to destroy a country's economy and take their land and? I don't know whether to laugh or whaaattt, when reading a statement like this! "Trump thinks Canadians are ’nasty’ for avoiding U.S., banning booze: Ambassador Author of the article: Canadian Press Brenna Owen Published Jul 21, 2025 • 2 minute read Article content Canadians avoiding travel to the United States and banning American alcohol are among the reasons U.S. President Donald Trump thinks they are “nasty” to deal with, the U.S. ambassador to Canada said Monday. Pete Hoekstra told a conference audience that such steps “don’t send positive signals” about Canada treating the United States well. Hoekstra was speaking at the annual Pacific NorthWest Economic Region Foundation summit in Bellevue, Wash. The Canadian Press was provided with a recording of the ambassador’s comments by the office of B.C. Premier David Eby, which said it received the audio from someone who was in the audience. Eby said in a statement that Hoekstra’s remarks show Canadians’ efforts to stand up to Trump are “having an impact,” and he encouraged people to “keep it up.” A representative of Hoekstra’s office did not immediately respond to a request for a comment."
American Republican politicians and officials still seem to be in the school playground mentality where people don't stand up to their bullying @CanadianLori. Did they really think other countries would not find ways to express their disapproval of Trump and his trade and tariff idiocies? There are plenty of other countries ready to trade sensibly and reliably. I like cooking and also like trying new recipes so we don't get bored. OH and I like to have lunch out about once a month and then go for a stroll afterwards but don't always manage it. The only take-away here is pizza - 5 miles away and no deliveries - in July and August and there is even a year round pizza machine now that produces one ready to cook in 2 minutes or hot and ready to eat in 3.5 mins. Not to be thought of tho. What the French do to pizzas, curries, Chinese and any other furrin food styles is really not good. Good job I can cook then.
Yes same here, not just the apps but the forecasters on TV said today the showers will be much lighter than yesterday. Yesterday after the early rain stopped it was dry, we have just had a torrential shower. I will say in this case the App I use was right, the tv forecasters wrong.
Travel due south for roughly 35 miles and you will find me, @Loofah. It's a worry when one of the world's superpowers is run by people with a toddler's mentality, @CanadianLori.
