Fully agree there's Lammas (August 1st) and Michaelmas (September 29th) to be celebrated first.

Now you seem to be trying to lump illegal economic migrants with those, such as people in Gaza, trying to escape war. They are totally different animals. The UK took many in from Ukraine, and most only wanted to be here for a short time before returning to the own country. Sadly that has been possible so far. I have zero sympathy for illegal economic migrants whose sole aim is to bypass the system of legal migration. Providing them with hotel accommodation is most definitely encouraging them.

Never, ever speak badly of Halloween. It's the only thing that keeps Christmas stuff off the shelves in July. :gaah:

@NigelJ There's also Assumption on August 15th and a nationl holiday in France and Belgium and, no doubt, other mainly RC countries.

Oddly, I can't find any reference to pagan origins for this or Michaelmas whereas Lammas - Ist day of harvest has been morphed by the RCs who take a loaf of bread to church and Halloween and All Saints Day are also a steal from the old Celtic calendar.

As far as I know they cant get out of Gaza, let alone ship them back.

What is going on in Gaza needs to be stopped, you would have thought that a race that had come through the holocaust would not be imposing something similar on another country.

Regarding migrants, they are just looking for a better life, I suppose you cant blame them, I just hope that once they drag us all down to the same level as the countries they have come from they will sod off somewhere else.

It wasn't like this even 20 yrs ago.

I cant go out in my front garden without someone shouting into their phone in a foreign language, walking by.

It changed dramatically in recent years, and not for the better.

Knife crime, shop lifting, not all to do with migrants but a fair amount of it is, they have brought their culture with them.

Donald Trump's anti immigration rants ( legal and illegal ) seem rather odd as his mother was from Scotland and yet he was born in the US ........... magic aside, he is therefore the offspring of a migrant ? Presumably his mother died before she was deported to her homeland.

Donald Trump's grandfather left Germany in 1885, aged 16. He ended up in Seattle, running a restaurant "with benefits" and thence to the Klondike where he ran a restaurant and overt brothel, serving the goldrush miners. He returned to his home town in Germany to marry but was booted out and deprived of his citizenship for evading the draft and leaving the country without the necessary permits. Moved to New York and worked as a barber and hotel manager till he died in the 1918 flu epidemic.

His son became a builder and landlord/property developer and did very well, creating trust funds for his 5 children. He married a young Scot who emigrated to NY to work as a nanny in 1930. It took Trump's mother 12 years to regularise her US citizenship and become a legal immigrant. Once married she concentrated on being a housewife and mother with some philanthropic activities.

Trump's elder brother died young from an alcoholic induced heart attack. His elder sister, who studied to become a lawyer after her children grew up, describes her father as a high functioning sociopath who was emotionally abusive. She describes her brother Donald as being cruel and having no principles.

@Obelix-Vendée Quite right there is Assumption day, but Mary has enough days already. Michaelmas is the feast of St Michael and All Angels a celebration of the Holy Host that defeated the demonic hordes. Traditionally a day for eating goose, there are still fairs around then in some places.
Yes Lammas was originally an celebration of the harvest celebrating the first loaf of harvest.
