There is still cake, lots of cake.
Please don't forget John Arlott of freaker fame
He would take a number of bottles of wine to the commentary box, for lubrication during the match.

Unfortunately the longwave transmitters are reaching the end of their lives and they are running out of spare parts.

We were told that July 1st was the date for shutting down longwave altogether, but it's still on the air - because some rural parts of the UK can't get FM, it's important for shipping, and is apparently vital in emergencies when other forms of communication won't work.

Anyway, we can still get R4 longwave here - but not TMS, because the Beeb have decided not to broadcast ball-by-ball commentary on longwave.

Yes TNT Sports (owned by Warner Brothers!) are the source of the problem. They own the rights to the Tour-de-France coverage (in the UK anyway) and were asking too much for ITV4 to even continue with a highlights programme, never mind the live footage.

I watch Quest's freeview coverage of the Tour of Spain (Vuelta) and I'm guessing your irritating woman is the same as the one on there as this channel is also owned by Warner Bros.

Again, not foolproof, as the TV can be on with no one watching ... and mine turns itself off if you haven't touched the remote for a given period (4 hrs, I think, though I have never timed it).

That is the usual timing but it can be altered - so I was told when I bought the TV many years ago. :heehee:

@Tidemark I remember the old 9" TV with a magnifying lens hooked over it.

                  That looks like Bakerlite.

Another mate once told me when he was on holiday one year it was doing the usual, raining, and they ended up spending a couple of hours excitement going around a Bakerlite museum.

Can't remember where he said it was now.

Thanks, @NigelJ , for that link about R4 LW. Some interesting stuff there - looks as if it might be reprieved indefinitely. Now all I need is TMS back, for happier weeding.

I completely agree, they are to be applauded. I did watch a little of the earlier games but the tour de france was on for the final, so didn't see any of them winning. It certainly is a much nicer game to watch in terms of play acting and fairness but I notice as it becomes more popular, there is a lot creeping in.

Again I'm not belittling what they have achieved but I don't like the comparison between the men's and women's game. They are completely different. I know the women were held back and that is a good argument but it's the competitiveness which makes sport entertaining at whatever level and just like with women's and mens tennis, its not really comparable between sexes. I think Serena Williams would supposedly have never made the top 500, at her best level, if she were a man, according to scientist who apparently worked it out when they wanted her to face Andy Murray.
In terms of the euros the men's game is far more competitive and has more teams but that shouldn't matter because it's the comparison which I think winds up the haters. If the football was just respected on its own merits I think people would be nicer about it but some of the language in commentary was embarrassing, everything was a "worldie save", or they found the "cheat code for foodball", just completely over the top. It happens in the men's game and other sports but it does seem worse in football.
I don't really get why they need to compare the sexes just let the players speak on the pitch. Recently one retired and the media called her the "woman's Messi" and this angered neanderthal supporters who went wild calling that out with some vitriolic replies. If the media had said she had the same affect on the women's game as Messi on the men's I think it would have been more widely accepted.

I do compare women's sport to men's but only because I'm a spectator.
I wouldn't go to watch my local men's team or expect it on TV.

From a spectators point of view I just find it mostly a bit slow.
I think women's football has a long way to go and I'm pretty sure that when it does England will be left behind, just like in the men's game.

Watching cricket is like watching paint dry. Sadly I have done both as the second coat had to be put on when the first coat was no quite dry.
