We have 5 roses, all from Woolworths in the late 1980s. I expect they were all unnamed. Nothing wrong with Woolies roses! They have beautiful scents too.

Maybe we should have a "show us your Woolworths roses" thread, rose spots included.

          Thats a brilliant idea;)

The "Woolworth" rose refers to two specific rose varities bred to commemorate the Woolworth retail chain in the UK. The first, a Hybrid Tea rose named "Chelsea Gold" was introduces in 1987but is no longer available. The second a Floribunda Rose named "The Wonder of Woolies"was introduced in 1995 both were bred by leading growers (Harry Wheatcroft) etc;)

The thing is, unlike supermarkets nowadays, they actually looked after the plants. They didn't have the shelf to compost heap culture.

A lovely trip down memory lane thanks @JennyJB . None of the shops round us sold the larger items, but I remember the seeds, seed potatoes, and the plants.

What a fascinating read @JennyJB , thanks so much for posting that.

I know my Nan and Mum both visited Woolies for plants etc, and I did too back in the 70s and 80s. A real trip down memory lane .

We moved here in 97 so my rose isn't as old as some. I loved the picnmix aspect.
