And while I'm on about it the flipping RHS refer to Mahonia gracilipes as the Slender Leaved Oregon Grape; it's a Chinese species never been American in it's entire evolution.

Winters are milder here than they were when I moved here, but the weather changes more rapidly autumn can be frost free and mild continuing into winter and then overnight you get several frosts and then it's back to being frost free; catches plants out everytime.
Or you get a hot dry summer followed by a very wet autumn/winter/spring even established plants find it difficult to cope with the suddenly changing stresses.

Who was it who said in the UK we don't have a climate we just get weather.

Must be one of the few countries where you can get the same temperature in January as you can in June.
Always has been in my experience.
13c in January is quite possible and it's also possible in June .

I worked with someone on an exchange from the US for a yr. What he found completely astonishing was here you could get every type of weather in a single day. Where he lived, if you woke up to rain, that was what you got for the whole day. Wake to blue skies and you knew it would stay dry, etc. The unpredictable threw him!

The last time we had snow here was 9 or 10 years ago. The odd little flake in winter since then but never actually settled. Whereas the prevailing wind was generally from the west, it has veered round to SW in the last 2 or 3 years. Definitely the driest Spring/Summer in a long time.

I think that statement really says it all.
A long time, suggests it's happened before.

I had a fortnight in Georgia US in July; 0600 hrs woke up to a pleasent temperature, blue sky and sun, then through the day it got warmer and more humid then about 1600 - 1800 hrs it clouded over followed by a thunderstorm finally by 1900 - 2000 hrs it was pleasent again sun and blue skies until sunset.

I can't remember where this chap hailed from in the US. Obviously, it's a big place. He was bemused by the whole idea that we took umbrellas "as a precaution" and coats might be required in June.

@pete It certainly will have happened before. So often we are led to believe in "unprecedented heat, cold, winds and storms since records began ". As far as I can see, accurate records of weather only date back to 1800 or thereabouts. I believe that we have certainly helped to accelerate any changes in the evironment as a whole as we "advanced" but nothing stands still including Planet Earth.

I seem to remember being told while in Denver Colorado, if you don't like the weather now wait a couple of hours and it will change.
I think their idea of changeable is a bit different to ours especially as it's in the south West.
All places are different but a small island like ours in these latitudes where the jetstream rules are never going to be predictable to any great degree imo.

And without the jetstream, we'd be in all kinds of bother. Skiing on the IOW and such like. ;)
