When my family first moved to Guernsey they were still using Dakotas as passenger transport. So noisy and uncomfortable. We had to declare our personal weight as well.
On one occasion, when travelling home from college in the UK, I was a passenger on a boat from Weymouth that was so full I was put down in the hold along with other passengers, given a thin blanket and told it was the only seating left on the boat! A long, cold night, 6 hours if I remember correctly and I do not think anyone complained.Thank goodness it was a calm crossing.

As such a range of things can trigger an allergic reaction these days, we have to assume something has gone wrong with the body's trigger systems and work from there. Why are our immune systems making these errors?

Not sure why you think this should happen as the article is about food labelling with potential allergens, it does not mention India or lentil allergy specifically. It just says that lentil is something often used and they are now aware it may cause allergic responses. It should be noted that most of this work will have been done in Europe or the US and not included communities were lentils in all their forms are a large part of the diet.
The testing has improved over the years and like a lot of things if you look for them you find them. Many in the first world who have allergy problems are allergic to multiple things often found in highly processed foods.
What is more of a concern to India is the increasing obesity, diabetes, heart disease and kidney disease developing in the middle classes due to the adoption of a more western lifestyle and diet.

Cleanliness and not enough exposure as an infant to the natural world resulting in an oversensitive immune system.

When I did my hippie tour of the world and stayed in India, I stayed in the Indian equivalent of B&Bs. That is, I would arrive somewhere on a long distance bus and be greeted by a gaggle of young people who would then compete for who was going to offer me the best rate for a room and board. Being a cheapskate, I usually chose the cheapest (and cleanest looking person). My meals invariably reflected the cost of my lodging and were always, always, based on lentils. If allergy to lentils befalls folk like that, they are done for.

I don't think I've ever eaten lentils, I didn't realise they were considered as food.

Wondered why the supermarkets sell them.

Whilst there may well be several reasons for certain allergies, the constant exhortation to disinfect everything and the lifestyle ( chosen or enforced ) which removes so many from the natural world and a bit of dirt doesn't help to build the immune system.

Sounds really tasty, they might call it lentil soup but what do they add to it to give it taste.

Food these days seems to have this idea that we eat lots of tasteless crap and add things to make it taste of something.

Pasta probably being no 1 on the list, but there are lots of others.

What happened to when food tasted of what it was and we ate stuff that we liked because it tasted nice rather than some tateless bulk with something added to actually give it a flavour.

I make spicy lentil soup quite often and it's quick and easy. The most common lentils for making the soup are the red lentils.

Chop and fry some onions and also some crushed garlic, add finely chopped carrots, (quantities can be supplied if necessary but there are lots of recipes on the internet :)), wash the red lentils in cold water very well, add the lentils and some boiling water - you will need to skim the froth that comes to the surface.

Add a bay leaf, cumin powder (I roast and grind my own) and a veggie stock cube (or chicken if you prefer), a little tomato paste and it is then cooked and ready to serve in 15-20 minutes, I make a large saucepan of it and it keeps in the fridge well and can be frozen.

It is usually served with some lemon to squeeze into it. You can dress the soup with parsley, coriander or mint - depending on which part of the world you come from. :heehee:

It's a popular soup in Europe, India, the Middle East and Latin America (doesn't leave much else!).

To be fair, the likes of Pasta, Rice, Lentils, dried Beans and similar are simply a base so always need something added. No change there. A lot fresh veg and fruit on sale now have had the flavour bred out of them over the years. Home grown or local suppliers you can trust are the best way if you can do it.
Spices and other condiments can make all the difference.

Why is it called lentil soup? :roflol:Why not onion, carrots, bayleaf, and cumin powder soup with lentils.
Surely Lentil soup would be diabolical without all the other stuff that gives it a taste.
