Our council don't give out bags. If we have clothing to go then we are told to put it in an old carrier bag, tied at the top, and placed on top of our recycling bin.

Dont think councils do, its the charities that do that, I get mostly Cancer charity bags about once a month.

I'd never put a book in the rubbish altho I have seen people do exactly that at the local tip. We have a community room in the village which has a couple of shelves of books which people can borrow and return ( or not ) .
We did often get the charity bags thru the door but not recently. Our local depot has a Clothes bin and also one for shoes ( pairs in a bag ).
Some years ago, I had to pay to have a 2 seater sofa taken away. I had offered it to several charity shops but they wouldn't accept it because it had no Fire Warning label . Now I wonder because of fires started in homes charging electric scooters and the likes.

They have never accepted furniture without the fire labelling, I think it's illegal to sell it and has been for years.

Not enough people to be worth their time and half of them have gates across their entrance, mainly to deter burglars. They work - because none of them have been burgled :heehee:

Charity shops use to be able to sell on the unwearable stuff as "rag" to traders but the price has plummeted. 'Rag' price slump costs EACH charity £5k a week

There are some books that have absolutely no worth to anyone though, e.g. "Windows Vista for Dummies". Though having said that, Amazon is offering a new copy for a mere £13.79.

I got a breast cancer research one a couple of weeks ago and as I'd just been turning out some cupboards I was able to fill it. Then I forgot to put it out! Got another bag through the door this week - same charity - so hopefully I'll succeed this time.

We have a book exchange in our community centre - drop off any books that you don't want any more, pick up any you want to read. I don't think anyone checks them, you just put whatever you're dropping off on the shelves, and help yourself if there's something you fancy reading. Up to you whether you take it back there when you've finished with it (I usually do although it can be months later).

Our B&Q has a section at the exit where you can recycle stuff, and they had a set of shelves for leaving books, DVDs etc. A while ago they left a sign saying they didn't want any more CDs/DVDs, but I think they still take books. We recycled a lot of my younger daughter's old books there when she moved last year. We were lucky that we managed to get her old DVDs too before they stopped taking them!

I think there's a container for CDs and DVDs at our local recycling centre, but I don't know what they actually do with them. They have one for books too.
