No smartphones here, but my OH's tablet sounded.

I was watching the BBC news channel when the presenters were waiting for it, I believe I'm right in saying that of the three phones they had, two sounded the alert but not at the same time.
What made me smile was the one presenter replaying it so that anyone who'd missed it could hear it. After a while his phone began playing M C Hammer's "Can't touch this".

Could have been worse. Imagine if it was "It's the end of the world as we know it" by REM. :yikes::yikes::yikes::yikes:

Or "We will all go together when we go!" by Tom Lehrer.

We will all go together when we go.
All suffused with an incandescent glow.

Remember sitting on a plane once that had a problem before take off, the pilot said it can be sorted out but might take a while, meanwhile we will play some music.

Knock knock knocking on heavens door was the first one.

We both got it nearly at the same time, last time they messed it up at some point and everyone didn't get it. It's ok for the younger generation they would have a mobile. My hubby says to me that i should always have mine with me, he takes his into the bathroom when he goes, he never used to but we've got rid of the landline,I should have it with me when i do the gardening but i have nowhere to put it.

I only heard about the alarm on here @fairygirl. I don't read newspapers or listen to the radio and don't have a television, but anything necessary still manages to filter through to me. We've managed to exist without all this technology in the past, so what makes it necessary now?

What I said about a nuclear attack was tongue in cheek @Blue arbour because I think the alert system isn't necessary. We've managed to exist without these alarms until now. It's just more unnecessary technology.

I have a modern car that digitally bleeps with just about every move I make. Most of it I've turned off, but some of it can't be. In fact a lot of it is dangerous. If you can't drive a car without out all of this then you shouldn't be behind the wheel. Accidents are now happening because some are saying "my can't didn't tell me to do this or that". What! It's health and safety gone mad! Are people so brainwashed now, they can't think for themselves anymore?

As for the fires. I knew about the bad fires here in Scotland last year. Did I need an alarm for it? No.

I have a car like that too @Sheal - I got my daughter to switch all the stuff off! Silence....
I totally agree with you about all these r*ddy bells and whistles, and no - people can't seem to think for themselves at all. They're a distraction rather than being useful.
I'm sure I've told the story about when I bought that car, and the bloke went to great lengths to tell me about all the rubbish, including the flashing light on the quarter light on the driver's door - to tell me when someone was overtaking. I said to him 'isn't that what my mirrors are for?' He didn't know what to say. The stupid thing kept malfunctioning too, and when it was in the garage it was supposedly 'fixed'. Nope. It came on whenever I went round corners, or when I was in an empty glen with no other vehicles anywhere near me.
Another thing my daughter disconnected for me...
I had a problem with a previous car too, which had a 'safety feature' which meant it slowed to about 10 - 15 mph if you were in dangerous road conditions - ice/snow/mud etc. The final straw with that was when it came on when I was about to go onto a motorway. They never could find out what was wrong with it. Unbelievably dangerous, but supposed to be for safety.
If they took all these stupid things off the cars would be half the price, which is what they don't want. Don't start me on these screens people have on their dashboards either - they're the size of my laptop! How is that safe?

I also agree with you about the fires and these warnings. Just another pointless 'gimmick' IMO.

I'm sure at some point the mobile phone will be an implant so it is always with you.
I can see it now, people going off to foreign countries to get one installed on the cheap.

There was certainly info about the alarm online @Sheal - and I would have seen it there before I heard it on the radio or tv news ,just from opening the laptop and switching it on.
Maybe some folk just blank everything out unless it's some daft video online!

I read a book by Dean Koontz @pete - probably more than 30 years ago. I can only remember the thing about people's hands becoming joined to their computer screen....
You're not far off with that idea!

BAH !! Those screens, there's one on my car and I had to ask the garage where I bought it to switch it off. For one thing the radio was irritating (can't stand those yapping DJs)
The chap said "Switch it off ???" and I replied "YES !"
It's right there in front of me but the switches for the heater etc are much further down and you have to look downwards to see them (which is dangerous) but to me demisting the windscreen and keeping warm are more important than a screen with lots of nonsense on it.

I'm with you all the way on your comments @fairygirl. My current car is just 17 months old and I/we, other half and I, have had it from new. We've had ongoing issues from day one with the stop/start operation and it's spent a lot of time with the main dealer. The stop/start has got a complete mind of its own, and at times the engine cuts when I'm actually driving. It's got me into a few sticky and dangerous situations. Having had enough we spent time at another dealership last week and have signed up for another new car, the same make and model as the car we had previously to this current nightmare. It's cash we weren't expecting to lay out at this time but being safe on the road is foremost. Our current car is still under warranty so the dealership we're buying from will thrash out the problems with the other dealer.

I received nothing on my laptop and if it wasn't for the fact my husband's phone blared out a day later than stated, I wouldn't have known about it. Again, if they can't get the alarm to sound at the right time, what's the point?

The rubbish installed on new cars this days is just one of the things putting me off buying a new one, the main reason is I'm yet to find a one or two yr old used car that I like, they seem to have lost the plot regarding design.
BTW, I'm not referring to a battery car.
