Just a random thought about ID. We all have a National Insurance number. Why isn't that enough?

That was discussed on question time last night. Lisa Nandy said, though you need to have a NINO to claim and work, with no photo ID, it was insufficient proof that you were that person according to the NINO

I have to say Keir has been quite unlucky with timing that this should hit the headlines on the same day it has come to light details of nursery aged children are being traded on the Dark Web, demonstrating that data theft is a growth industry ... and a very profitable one at that.

A couple of times this morning, BBC interviewees have floated the idea this ID card could hold DNA details. Anyone voluntarily adding their DNA information to any virtual data base is absolutely nuts, IMV. Yes, if I am suspected of a crime, I would need to give a sample. But, as someone who has never so much as had a parking ticket or a library fine, I'm blowed if I am handing over my DNA for all and sundry to access at whim.

There's probably as much info on your SM loyalty card and the info won't be sold on to other users!

SM loyalty cards don't have your NI number, your employment history, your HMRC records, and so on. These cards potentially could, if all contact with gov services is linked as suggested. Also I'm sure I read somewhere that the gov handed over access to some NHS records to private companies during Covid. There would be nothing stopping them moving on to the next step of selling on data. Even if it was supposedly randomised, that's not foolproof.

It might start off as just for workers taking jobs, but there is no way to then stop its remit growing and growing.

Well we just need to have photo NI details then. There really is something sinister about digital id. I have just signed the online petiton against it which is already up to more than 700000 signatures.

I haven't really read anything about these new id cards because I'm not convinced they will ever become a reality but surely the people who are working in the black economy and coming here illegally, would circumvent them anyway. I believe half the dodgy delivery drivers just use someone else's id at the moment, so I'm not sure how that would change things.
In my opinion they should go for the companies instead. If deliveroo was heavily fined everytime one of their illegals was caught, then I'm sure they would put in more rigorous measures to stop them.

It's a bit like the government making pornsites "safer" recently when everyone told them long before hand how people could just download a vpn and navigate around the new legislation.

I have a Birth Certificate ( which presumably lasts a lifetime ) as well as a Passport with a photo and a Driving Licence without a photo. Both of them past their Sell By date
Considering how easy it is for hackers to access data from the internet, I would imagine any Digital ID system would soon be the victim of a cyber attack. Govts and business do not appear to have a foolproof method of safeguarding their data as yet. You only have to look at the recent activity in Hacker World to realise that it is unsafe. If other countries wish to go down this route of compulsory digital ID for their citizens, that is up to them. I can't see how it can be enforced here - fines ? Unpaid fines resulting in a prison term ? No room in prisons ? Time this govt. in particular refrains from grabbing at straws and then trying to make something substantial out of them.

So our leader is saying ID cards will protect jobs as it will show your entitlement to work but know mention of keeping people out of the country who have entered illegal

I'll probably be dead before they sort this out if it takes the usual course that anything governments are involved in.

They are saying on the news you will need it if you want to work.

I don't want to work.

It’s impossible to find work with a legal company if you’re illegal here.
One wonders why Labour is trying to tell us that they can stop the illegals working with that digital ID card.

                                We also signed the petition.
