Ah, that is very interesting re the Euan Blair connection, @Fat Controller.

If we have to have it, the system should be run by a not-for-profit company with complete transparency re finances.

You'll never get transparency where government and civil service are concerned. The Post Office scandal should be more than enough to tell us how government and technology cannot be trusted.

I'm quite glad that Starmer has thrown this dice as I reckon that this, swiftly followed by a pretty dire budget that exposes Rachel from Accounts incompetence, then followed by an absolute drubbing at the elections in May, will finish him off completely.

They must do as there is simply no hiding from it nowadays. Seems abundantly clear to me that they know (and by they, I mean Tories and Labour amongst others) are well aware that things are so far gone they've got next to zero hope of getting back into power for a very, very long time. Folks have finally had enough. So, in that knowledge, they are now going for a 'scorched earth' approach to make sure that everything is so badly broken, so difficult to fix, so difficult to change that they can sit on the sidelines and carp away as it if wasn't them that caused it.

Do you think they are doing things so badly that if reform get in next time things will be so bad that they'll never be able to sort everything out and then people won't vote reform again

I'm beginning to think people will stop voting full stop.
I think we are broke far too much debt, most of our taxes seems to go on paying for the borrowing,
spending money trying to save the world.
Pouring money into benefits, allowing crime to get out of hand.
                Buying everything from abroad.
A very sad, lacklustre population, meaning we have to import labour.
                The list could go on.
We were on the brink before covid, but since then we have just nosedived.

I think that is their thinking, yes - however, they are exposing themselves at every single turn to the point that very few except dyed-in-the-wool supporters will ever vote for them again. In the past, they've used the bogieman of calling folks "far right" and "racist" (and a lot worse) which most normal folks were horrified to be associated with... thing is, it has been trotted out so often with zero evidence purely to shut down debate that it no longer works to scare folks off from voting the likes of Reform.

Best of it is, if they really wanted to stop Farage and the so called far right, all they had to do was do what people had voted for them to do. Run the country well, behave with fiscal competence and maintain our security.

I've got a local councillor, Lib Dem, and he knows full well that his party won't ever get my vote in a general election - - he, however, gets my vote despite me not sharing his parties politics on many/most things, because he is actually a pretty decent councillor.. he is active, responsive and at the least he listens and tries to help. That is all most of us are actually wanting.

I am sick and tired of being told how to live my life by people that wouldn't know hardship if it bit them on the arse - by people that are scooting round in private jets and armoured Range Rovers while criticising me for daring to drive to work or heat my home. I am sick and tired of having people in charge that will throw endless money at other countries whilst letting pensioners in this country freeze. I am sick and tired of hearing about knives, guns, rapes and drugs on our streets whilst our politicians argue about whether women can have a penis or how many 20mph zones they can impose on us. I suspect I am like most folks - I just want peace to go about my life and for everyone to have a modicum of safety.

Blair started it with the likes of PFI and it continued from there... Hunt knocked the bolts out of the NHS years ago (the bits that Blair didn't kill with PFI debt), May set our doom spiral into operation then handed the gauntlet to Johnson who spaffed so much money up the wall over the name of something that to this day I am convinced was a biological weapon, him and then Sunak continued it and then Rachel got her paws on things and really went to town with our cheque book.

We spent tens of billions on a train set, whilst folks are screaming for homes. We failed and continue to provide cost efficient energy and dress it up under the heading of climate change (look deeper into the wind farms, they aren't exactly friendly to the environment!) and that in turn knackers what little industry we have left.

Unfortunately, politicians seem to find that party politics put them in a mental straight jacket that removes all imagination and competence.

If they put even a small %age tax on oligarch and other billionaire assets they could fund the NHS for everyone, pay for decent school buildings and teachers and free further education, thus improving the lives of the vast majority and wiping out crippling debt levels for some, reduce stresses and leave room for kindness to others, no matter how different or similar.

Improving existing housing stock and converting empty factories and office blocks to housing would radically ease the housing crisis and providing decent youth facilities - before and after school club, youth clubs, sports and vocational activities would reduce juvenile crime and make life better for just about everyone.

The only people really making money from property prices are estate agents, mortgage providers and solicitors. The increase in house prices could have been greatly reduced if mortgage providers had stuck with a maximum of 2 1/2 times joint income, as was the case for many, many years. They don't care that people may not be able to pay if interest rates increase. Worst case is they repossess and sell it again.
It would be impossible to cut house prices by half now because so many people would, through no fault of their own, lose hundreds of thousands of pounds. The genie is out of the bottle and there seems no way to get it back in.

I bought a new hp printer afew years ago but the thing wouldn't let me scan unless i had a hp account which i wouldn't do, so if i wanted to scan a doc to put on the computer i would take a picture with my camera then on computer, well, yesturday i google how to scan with out an account hoping for around way of doing it, not using the hp software but i found out that you can use windows fax and scan, it works a treat so i'm now happy that i can do this :)

Funny thing is that on the top of the printer it says "Keep It Simple" so why have account why not just let people use it with out that controll

Whilst I agree to some degree on taxation on the mega-rich, the reality is that doing so simply drives them out.. they take all of their wealth and move elsewhere in the world and with them goes all of their spending. The starting point has to be getting shot of waste, however small that may be.

I'll give you an example - there is a road very near to us that the surface has been pretty bad on for years. Not potholes as such, but sunken trenches every 10ft or so: (you can sort of see a couple of them in the image below)

                            upload_2025-9-27_15-44-12.png

Residents and locals have complained frequently about the road and it was always answered that it would form part of 'cyclical maintenance' - in May or June of this year the council came round and renewed all of the road markings from one end to the other, so despite the surface being awful, you could at least see where lane markings etc were.

Last week, the council rocked up, stripped the surface off the entire full length of the road and laid a lovely new surface without the ridges... yesterday, they painted the lovely new road markings on the new surface. A great result in the end, but are you telling me that they didn't know in May/June that they were doing to resurface that road 3 to 4 months later? How much money was wasted there?

One tiny example that is repeated over and over again in this country and then we wonder why we're in a mess?

As for housing stock and imaginative use of buildings, again I agree - but, one of the worst things we have done there is the listed building process. Now, rather than try to work with a building that is often needlessly listed, a building is simply left to rot until it then miraculously catches fire... eventually, all that is left is a gutted ruin left like an old castle or it finally gets bulldozed and something completely out of character gets put in it's place. We've got far too many regulations where strangling us where we don't need them and not enough where we do!

Do you have data confirming that the mega rich leave Britain if taxation increases, @Fat Controller ? I thought it was just one of those excuses people gave for being against taxing them... a lot of their wealth will already be held overseas, for tax reasons, after all. And most people are remarkably attached to the place where they live, with family around them, children in school etc.

Start with Charlie Mullins and work from there. Horrid, horrid guy, but worth an absolute stack of money and he has gone.

Think about it, if you had many millions and are going to lose ever increasing amounts on any income you get from that, why would you stay? Especially given that you've got the liquidity to be able to move?
