I am inordinately smugly proud of myself .
The central heating thermostat went blank
Cross fingers, maybe it's the battery. Maybe we won't freeze and boil kettles while we wait for a chap to suck his teeth and give us an estimate.
I couldn't access the batteries. Were there batteries at all?
Enter you tube. Pull down a bit you didn't notice , slot in a couple of batteries and bobsyeruncle.
Of course there's a load of shxte on you tube. Some of it is dangerous or just plain stupid but if you're not stupid it's just the job

      Good for you.

I don't use youtube at all. I used to, occasionally, look at it for a piece of music but not for anything else. The, after an update of my Avast antivirus, I couldn't get youtube. It just started buffering. As I didn't really need it I didn't bother about it and it went on for most of a year. Then my friend went to upgrade my computer and 'fixed' it. Apparently it is a common problem caused by Avast. I haven't been on youtube since then. :heehee:

We're fortunate to have friends that between them seem to be able to sort things out so never had to worry about things going wrong. Of course, there are usually things that we can help them out with as well.

Glad you got your thermostat back.
Yes, if you can get past the adverts and the self promotion it can be very helpful.

Nearly every time I have my car serviced about a week later I start getting messages telling me it's time for an oil change.
I can never remember how to cancel it and always have to look on YouTube.

Lots of useful stuff on there.

I sometimes watch compiled highlights of a tennis match. Three hrs reduced to 3 mins! It is a bit discombobulating at first, and you have to keep a close eye on the score to know where you are, but as someone who can otherwise only watch Queens and Wimbledon, it's better than nothing! :blue thumb:

I did use it once to work out how to reset the clock in my car, but the process was so complicated that by the time I had finished, the clock was slow ... so now I just keep that on BST all yr.

There is some useful stuff on the internet. We have found and kept instructions to repair a squealing laser printer and reset the counter on an inkjet printer that says its pad is full. It has saved us hundreds of pounds.

I find google/youtube handy for hacks to solve some problems thrown up by IOS updates. Also lots of “ how to” things on there too.

The same as you did before You Tube, read books, ask mates and neighbours. Or just manage to work it out for yourself.

I actually find youtube useful enough that I pay for it. I now watch most of my TV on it, with genuinely no adverts (even iPlayer keeps trying to show you trailers saying how great the BBC is. If I'm already watching the BBC why do I need to see that?).

Also, BigJetTV live ...With the storms forecast this weekend hoping for a good show from Heathrow.

I thought it was a bit expensive to subscribe so I have to put up with the ads, they are annoying.

Not heard of big jet TV.

I think it's about £12 per month so yeah, not cheap. But I use it so much more since subscribing. The adverts are unbearable, most of them are for scam products (e.g. the miracle heater that will heat your whole house for pennies and the energy companies don't want you to know about. They put a whole back story behind it about a scientist who found this amazing secret ... it's just an electric fan heater).

BigJetTV is a guy called Jerry who does live broadcasts from airports. It's particularly entertaining in bad weather; you're always hoping for a last-minute go-around. You don't tend to get bothered with adverts in live broadcasts.

So, excuse my ignorance, but what kind of TV progs are there on YouTube? I thought it was all short videos. Maybe I could see a whole tennis match! :blue thumb:

There are plenty of full-length programs. The main terrestrial services all have a presence, plus you have content from all around the world too. I tend to like documentaries and I'm never stuck for something to watch there.

But I like the shorts too - especially https://www.youtube.com/@Squirrels_at_the_window

We find ourselves repairing broken plastic parts by making new ones out of metal. Hubby has just remade the plastic hinges for the front flap of the HP laser printer using the lid of a salmon tin (well washed). Next he is looking to remake the bedroom curtain rail plastic glider with metal. You can't buy the part anymore and I don't want a new curtain rail.

Hubby loves taking machinery apart when it goes wrong. He usually identifies the faulty part and replaces it.

YouTube is very useful to get tips on dismantling things and identifying the faulty part. My neighbours would just say buy a new one.
