For those of us with Netflix, I watched the first episode of the new Spanish sitcom "Old Dog, New Tricks" about a vet who has to give up his farm practice and work at one of those huge petstores, and laughed out loud several times. Some excellent main characters, plus with the setting lots of possibilities of amusing patients and their "parents".

Funny but I was only thinking yesterday it's about the only detective programme I've been able to watch from start to finish.
Most seem to be 2 hours or more of completely pointless waffle that has no bearing on the plot.

I love crime dramas, and watched Ludwig, but I really couldn't get engaged because I didn't find the character believable enough. How did none of the people he'd worked with not realise he was totally different!
If anyone wants a look, although I don't know if it's still available, the Billy Joel doc. 'And So It Goes' was utterly riveting, and also heart rending at times. I saw it was 2x 3 hour episodes and thought 'Oh jings, even 3x 2 hour ones would be hard- I don't know if I can manage anything that length at one go!' but it wasn't difficult at all.
I'll just say, if you do take a look [and you wouldn't have to be a mega fan] the bits about his grandfather's business in WW2 drove me to tears, and when I told my daughters about it - they gasped.

Ludwig had a nice theme tune, but I agree with @fairygirl it suffered hugely in the believability dept.

I took it as a joke. Like in Life of Brian “He’s not the Messiah. He’s a very naughty boy!” Or the Brian Rix farces (remember those?:))

I know what you mean @Tidemark , but I still like a crime drama to be dramatic enough and the characters to be believable enough. I was struggling to suspend my disbelief with Ludwig.
I couldn't watch that series from a few years ago with Suranne Jones [?] because her character just didn't seem realistic to me - a doctor I think. It's just how I am. I usually try to keep going with a series when I start it, but there was one recently that I had to chuck too. Can't even remember what it was!

The Coldwater one that's just been on was stupid as well IMO. The ending was lousy.

I suppose a lot of screenwriters/scriptwriters are either scraping the bottom of the barrel or are just not very good! So many crime dramas required, but only so many plots to work with, without stretching the viewers' willingness to 'suspend disbelief'.
I've given up on most of them. I quite liked 'The Chelsea Detective' but even that had some very silly and slack plotting going on, and I got fed up in the end. Didn't like 'Ludwig', can't stand David Mitchell, and the premise was ludwigcrous
Is there ANYTHING worth switching the box on for these days?

I quite liked 'Shetland' but I know lots of people weren't keen because they were unable to understand the accents

I'm trying to think what I do actually watch on TV these days and I cant think of anything, just the occasional old film and that's about it, apart from the news.
I've stopped watching wildlife programmes because I've seen it mostly before and not keen on watching loins rip the odd wildebeest apart, gardening programmes are more of the same mostly, just different presenters.

Its rammed full of stupid celebs who have done nothing other than being celebs, who then spend time on game shows proving how dopy they are.

Or there are soaps that have totally ridiculous storylines.

            I've given up.:frown:

My thoughts exactly, @pete. My TV licence expires next month and I am seriously considering cancelling it. £175 is a lot of money when the only thing I watch is the tennis in the summer.

Apparently one idea for funding the BBC is to scrap the licence fee and add a charge to Council Tax. That would not be popular.

As the request was for recommendations, mine would be an Australian drama series, "A Place to Call Home". The BBC showed it in an early afternoon slot in spite of it having some fairly dark and also adult themes at times. Excellent actors, beautiful scenery and a long running story arc.

My other recommendations are both Australian. "Five Bedrooms", and also "The Newsreader" which is currently available on iplayer.
