That comes back to education. Italy is home to the RC faith and its leaders and policy makers yet has one of the lowest reproduction rates.

China enforced a one baby rule to bring down its population which led to girl babies being killed or abandoned (many adopted by other nations) and now has a population imbalance.

    India tried enforced sterilisation.

We knew a white British couple in Belgium who had 6 children, in addition to the 2 daughters he had with his first wife. Chappy's view was that somebody had to out produce all the Turks and Arabs in Belgium. She put her foor down after no 6.

Apparently around 7% of the humans to live on the planet are alive today. Given how long we have been here, that's a pretty crazy number. Imagine how high the population would have been if we never had murder or war.

A friend who lives abroad, in a predominantly catholic country, lost her husband to pancreatic cancer. He was looked after at home, with plenty of pain relief as needed, and basically the dose was increased to ensure that it was always effective, and continued to be increased to eliminate pain until the inevitable happened.
I thought that was what was supposed to happen, but it appears that there is now some sort of regime where you arent allowed to have larger and larger doses, or more frequently than originally prescribed. In case of what? You might become addicted? You might get a fatal overdose?
Hearing that reminded me of my mother being discharged from hospital after a stroke, when there was nothing more they could do for her. She was being fed via a nasogastric tube, and I was discussing this with the palliative care doctor who was organising her transfer home. Don’t need to worry about that, I was told, as she would be having the tube removed before she left. Would she be having it replaced at home, No! I was taken aback, and asked why. Because it might dislodge and she could get the food in her lungs, which might prove fatal. And her response when I asked what the outcome would be if she was no longer being fed? Just looked at me!
Mum came home - she lived with my sister, who had been a nurse- with the feeding tube in place, and passed away amongst family three months later.

I'm not sure war is effective as a control of overpopulation as birth rates tend to increase in the aftermath. Pandemics have probably worked better throughout history.

How many Italians are devout catholics, most are probably normal people, just trying to get by.
Like the rest of us, the Vatican is something else, bit like saying everyone in Britain is C of E.
Most are Muslim as far as I can tell.

God help us,:roflol: religion has caused more wars than it it has solved, personally I'd ban it.

That's just it @pete. The Italians are not that gullible any more, thanks to improved education.

If the politicians who dream up and start conflicts and wars were the ones who had to get up out of their seats, leave their offices, put on a uniform, pick up a gun, and do the actual fighting, leaving the rest of the population at home to watch, I’m sure there would be no more wars.

Its strange, as in the old days most politicians tended to be old veterans, from previous wars, these days they are often just university graduates that have not even had a proper, job let alone fought in a war.
There are exceptions I agree, but the kinds of politicians we have these days are not what they were.

Many view immigration as a silent invasion. Come in, multiply, outnumber is their belief.

Me, I just don't want our country's resources and services overwhelmed to the detriment of those already here.

And I detest cheaters and people who won't try to speak either of our official languages because that adds another layer of services we need to provide. Interpreters cost big money.

I had a young lady from Turkey here for Thanksgiving dinner last year and was impressd with her English. She was worried that her enunciation was incorrect and I assured her that she had nothing to worry about. She told me her whole family studied and practiced English long before they their immigration application was accepted so as to be ready to "fit" in. A lovely young lady indeed!

Surprisingly, Muslims make up only about 8% of the UK population, not that you'd know this from the huge amount of media coverage they get. Atheists/agnostics and those who don't practise any religion are far and away the largest group but rarely get any sort of mention.

I did ask some doorbell-bothering JWs once whether any pairs of atheists had ever visited them brandishing reading matter, and if not, why did they think that was. They were flummoxed by the question.
